Lanterns Episode 3 Recap: "OutKast" Reveals John Stewart's Origin And Big Hal Jordan Twist - Spoilers

The third episode of DC Studios and HBO's Lanterns finally reveals John Stewart's origin story and his connection to the Green Lantern Corps. It also delivers another Hal Jordan shocker.

Lanterns' third episode, "OutKast," finally pulls back the curtain on John Stewart's origin story. We quickly learn that the Green Lantern ring appeared before his father, John Stewart Sr., who, when pulled into a bubble and asked if he was afraid, replied, "Yes."

As a result, he isn't chosen, and Hal Jordan is, though it doesn't sound like he was close to being the ring's first choice. John's father spirals after realising his fear cost him the chance to become Earth's protector, and one of the Guardians of the Universe visits his wife, Bernadette, and presents her with a large diamond as an apology.

Furious at the Guardians for what they've done to her husband and their lack of understanding about how fear is part of being a Black person in America, Bernadette convinces the cosmic being to give their infant son, John Jr., a chance. The Guardian promises to watch over the boy and see how he progresses, leaving his parents to raise him to be fearless.

John's childhood is borderline abusive; he's not allowed to pursue his love of art, frequently has an apple shot off the top of his head, and is left in a rough part of town to find his way home (his brothers grow distant from him, and even his parents keep him at arm's length to instil fearlessness).

Eventually, he becomes a Marine and is tasked with assassinating a Russian war criminal. John spends nine months camped out waiting to take the shot, only for Hal Jordan to rocket in—he overheard a member of the military talking about the target in a strip club—and drop the guy off at Guantánamo Bay.

Someone has to take the fall, and John is dishonourably discharged, but on the plus side, he finally gets to go to art school...until a Guardian tells him that they're ready to interview him.

It turns out that ever since Sinestro went rogue and killed one of the Guardians, they now choose who gets to wield the rings. They're concerned about how much affection Hal still has for his former mentor—even though he was the one who took him down—and plan to take his ring from him and give it to John.

Yes, John is being sent to Hal to train, but he's no backup; as soon as he's ready, Hal's ring will be his. Understandably, John isn't too bothered about this, seeing as it's the hero's fault he had a terrible childhood and that his military career was ruined.

In the episode's closing moment, John returns home, only to find that Hal is already there. He makes nice with his replacement's parents, but outside, tells John that he doesn't need a sidekick or a backup, and that he'll only get his ring over his dead body. That seems ominous.

Lanterns has cleared a few things up with this latest instalment, though we've yet to understand why John doesn't have the ring in 2026 and why Guy Gardner does. Perhaps he ultimately refuses to take it from Hal in 2016, prompting the Guardians to go with another backup? Whatever the case, the series is taking some big swings with the comics and redefining much of what we thought we knew about the Corps.

The show is fantastic and it’s such a joy to have the green lantern mythos engraved.
John is defending gonna be a beast once he gets the ring, we are in for some sick GL action in Superman 2

I thought this episode was okay. It was very heavy-handed with the race stuff, particularly in how it seemed to imply—admittedly through the lens of John's parents—that Hal was chosen because he's white. Also, he wasn't close to being a first choice to be Green Lantern?

They've gotta be heading down the villain route to frame him as such a shitty character. The show is compelling and well-acted, but it feels like it's trying very hard to be as impactful as Watchmen.

@JoshWilding - makes sense what you´re saying , i mean so far i hate the portrayal of hal, making him look like the worst ever lantern...everybody hates Hal in the show even the guardians...

@JoshWilding - The show isn't saying that Hal Jordan became a Lantern because of privilege.

That is merely John's mom's POV because she's angry over everything that's happened. Dialogue is supposed to be be heavy handed as she’s trying to get her point across to achieve her goals. She is clearly biased and projecting her own feelings onto John. Just cause a character speaks doesn’t mean they know the person they’re speaking about; it’s all their point of view.

We learn that Hal knows fear and has overcome it by his origin he explains to John in the bar.

If Hal didn't know what real fear was he wouldn't have became the most powerful lantern that defeated Sinestro.

@MisterBones - All valid points, but as I said in my comment, I’m aware it was from the perspective of his parents. It was just a strange route to head down, and one that felt heavy-handed, forced, and “I’m writing this for an Emmy” energy. I get what they were going for and there was some really strong ideas, but this just felt like a poor man’s Watchmen to me (that handled similar race issues with far more grace and believably). Overall, I think the series is treating Hal poorly, and Chandler is the only thing saving the character.

@JoshWilding - they’re a black family with parents who grew up in the 70s there’s no world where they don’t reflect on how racism impacted their life and in this instance misinterpreted what an alien event meant

This feels more like a dismissal of relevant points the show makes

JoshWilding - 8/31/2026, 8:46 AM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - I have less of an issue with race factoring into the story and more with how poorly it was delivered. This wasn't a particularly well-written episode to me - it didn't feel natural or really fit the story. Instead, it felt like a "Shit, we're on HBO, let's throw some Emmy-bait in" type of situation. John being Black should absolutely be a focal point, as it was in the comics, which tackled racism head-on when he was introduced and taught Hal some lessons. This just seemed forced to me.

ShimmyShimmyYA - 8/31/2026, 9:08 AM
@JoshWilding - but this episode isn’t about racism it’s about John and his family’s POV towards the green lantern , part of that is them trying to use the ring as a way of overcoming their status in society yes (it’s also an excuse for why his mom acts like that) but it’s also about John’s parents being abusive as hell who ruined his childhood because some alien job process ruined his dads career.

They’re basically football parents trying to vicariously live through their son

@JoshWilding - Serious question, Josh, my friend: what is the problem if they want to contend for an Emmy? Your comment comes across as very dismissive regarding the fact that a high-quality production like *Lanterns* has the ambition to vie for an Emmy! Why is that a bad thing?

@JoshWilding - I dont think it was poorly written. I definitely related to the dialogue because grew up in the 70s, 80s from their perspective.

@RobertARZVenez - I'm always down for a superhero adaptation to find award success. But this is like The Rock starring in The Smashing Machine. It's ticking boxes to enter contention, unlike The Penguin, which was pure quality storytelling.

@JoshWilding - completely agreed. This ep was on the nose, woke writing. No need to sugarcoat it at all. Ep 1 already tipped the hat that they would be headed this way with that scene of John on the phone and somebody telling him, "They're allowed to have tantrums; we're not." Just dog shit writing.

I wouldn't be surprised if this direction they're taking was the reason why so many actors declined to play Hal. Nobody wants to take part in professional victim storytelling anymore.

But to be completely honest, like you said, it's such a well-acted and fun show that 1 ep of bad writing doesn't ruin it at all...but we'll have to see how far they go with things. I'm still going to be pretty pissed if this is all we'll see of Chandler's Jordan.

@JoshWilding - Dialogue also comes from a specific character’s experience. It doesn’t have to reflect the whole idea of a show. It can inform us of characters intentions and that’s it. The alien doesn’t intentionally partake in racism, but from the mother’s POV(who has experienced it in her past) she connects being black with knowing fear. Personally, that felt realistic for John’s mother to make that connection. It was pretty insightful as well. I would have never even thought of how the comic book , playful way of the ring choosing someone may be one-sided, when placed in a fairly grounded world.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/31/2026, 4:17 PM
@LibraMattered - I like that interpretation. Food for thought, thank you!
Baf
Baf - 8/31/2026, 5:33 PM
@JoshWilding - This is exactly where I disagree. Yes, the show presents the idea that Hal was chosen because he's white. However, it presents that only through John's parents' perspective and their lived experience. It's not some objective declaration from the show. Besides, making race this central to John's upbringing wouldn't be “heavy-handed”. John Stewart is one of DC's most explicitly political characters, so actually exploring that history shows that the writers did their homework rather than forcing a modern message onto him.

interesting episode ,good writing and good acting but again...only construct we see it's a watch...we see a glimpse of a guardian for 10secs...hal using his ring from far away for 5secs....next episode getter bring some major cosmic shit or my interest in the series will end. On the plus side note it was nice to see hall jordan in full costume with the domino mask even if its a small photo on the newscast on TV. Too bad producers are afraid to show actual superhero stuff on a comicbook superhero series....
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/31/2026, 4:18 AM
@CarpesDiems - Either HBO execs said a hard no to full-blown superhero stuff, or (and I think this is quite likely after Damon Lindelof's "green" comments) the creative team is just embarrassed by the whole Green Lantern side of things. I do think we'll get a lot more, but three episodes in, and we've had what, a bottle opener, a bird, and a watch? And a bubble? It's disappointing.
CarpesDiems
CarpesDiems - 8/31/2026, 4:29 AM
@JoshWilding - completely agree with you ,very disappointing with the lack of stuff that makes green lantern so fun and great. I really hope we get more but we are almost halfway season already...
LibraMattered
LibraMattered - 8/31/2026, 3:28 PM
@CarpesDiems - It could be a few things but I think it’s probably budget and/or they’ll have a few episodes down the line that pay off with more constructs and aliens. They seem to be revealing more Green Lantern lore as they go on, which make sense. They don’t want to give it all away in the first few episodes.

LoudLon

@CarpesDiems - I'm as liberal as they come, but even I felt the racial thing was forced. The Guardians are completely unaware of any racial or cultural inequalities on Rarth. All they know is they asked this guy if he was afraid and he said yes, and that was it. It had nothing to do with him being black. Having the mother make it about that was a contrivance on the writer's part.
SurfinSuperman
SurfinSuperman - 8/31/2026, 7:44 AM
