Lanterns Episode 5 Completes DC Studios' Hal Jordan Character Assassination - But Is There Still Hope For Hal?

Lanterns Episode 5 Completes DC Studios' Hal Jordan Character Assassination - But Is There Still Hope For Hal?

This week's episode of Lanterns might have put the final nail in Hal Jordan's coffin, but will DC Studios surprise us all by delivering some big twists in the show's remaining three chapters?

Feature Opinion

With 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, Lanterns is a critical hit. There's no denying that the series is very good, bolstered by stellar performances from its leads and some mostly strong messaging. Even when the show's approach to racial issues veers between heavy-handed finger-wagging (who would have guessed that even the Manhunter's appearance boils down to racism) and "pick me" Emmy-seeking energy, this is still a much better-written DCU project than, say, Peacemaker Season 2 or Supergirl

Aaron Pierre is exceptional as John Stewart, while Kyle Chandler has successfully proved any doubters wrong with a standout take on Hal Jordan that makes us wish we lived in a world where he'd been cast as the hero a decade ago.

However, Lanterns has done Hal dirty and, five episodes in, it feels like DC Studios' character assassination is almost complete.

With three episodes remaining, a lot can change, and this opinion piece could quickly become irrelevant. Right now, it feels as though Lanterns is tearing Hal down to build John up. The worse Hal looks, the more virtuous John Stewart appears, which is why he rejected the ring that Hal was so desperate to hold onto. Several of the writers working on Lanterns have admitted they have no familiarity with Hal, so perhaps we shouldn't be surprised. It almost feels as if James Gunn's response to 2011's terrible Green Lantern movie was to put the final nail in Hal Jordan's coffin with this series, all so John can shine that little bit brighter.

Perhaps the remaining three episodes will reveal that Hal's fear of losing his ring corrupted him. That fear and the destruction of Rushville may mirror the comics, where Coast City being decimated broke the hero and eventually led to Hal becoming the villainous Parallax. A Season 2 pitting John against a Hal who has gone off the deep end sounds incredible, especially if Sinestro is pulling the strings.

It's a nice thought, but what about Lanterns has suggested we'll get anything like that? You can count the number of Green Lantern constructs on one hand—even in this week's action-packed episode, we only got shields—and the show's aliens all appear human. This is a grounded story. It's far more likely that Hal became disillusioned after Sinestro snapped and lost faith in the Guardians of the Universe, thereby becoming no longer worthy of the ring and showing John that being Green Lantern isn't all it's made out to be. That's a solid story, but one that makes a full-blown "Emerald Twilight" adaptation (that ends with Hal being renewed) feel like silly fan-fiction at this stage.

With it looking increasingly likely that Hal is dead in 2026 (Zoe's grandson/Kerry's son being a Manhunter created by the former is an obvious twist), it seems the DCU's take on this character will be defined by what a colossal failure he eventually became. It mirrors the comics to some extent and sets the stage for John to become one of the franchise's main players, and perhaps that's enough.

With Lanterns, DC Studios set out to make prestige television for HBO, and it's been rewarded with rave reviews and strong ratings. Mission accomplished. It's just a shame that, in that process, Hal has seemingly been thrown to the wolves and, for the second time in 15 years, he's come out the other side in as bad a spot as characters like Madame Web, Aquaman, and The Flash.

As I’ve said before, cosplayers and short-timers don’t deserve this show. It’s proof that the less input Gunn has, the more impressive the product. It was Gunn’s cut of ‘Supergirl’ that hit theaters. Google it. It’s ’Lanterns’ and the Reeves-verse holding the DC flag high. All else is greasy kid stuff. Jimmy can go fuсk himself.

@Lisa89 - The long-time readers of the Green Lantern stories that James Gunn claims he is such a big fan of and are fans of the mainstsay Lantern character, Hal Jordan, deserve better than this disdainful adapation of an iconic and belovd character don't deserve this slop of a show that can't even bring itself to show aliens that actually look like as such. The "greasy kid stuff" is what has made them all work for decades before this half-assed series was approved, which it can kindly go [frick] itself.

Josh nails it that this is a well written and obviously great show, but “Right now, it feels as though Lanterns is tearing Hal down to build John up.”

And that is such a cowardly cop out by the writers.

A lot can change in 3 eps but i also don’t have faith in where things are headed. They keep making the Halogram very nice and kind, so Im not sure where that’s going, but it’s too obvious of a thread to drop off entirely.

As for S2 chances, Lindeloff will not be involved and the rest of the writing staff is not capable of delivering quality work. It would likely be as bad of a drop off as True Detective S2 and The Last of Us S2, because HBO is incapable of learning from past mistakes.

All that said, this show has been incredibly good.

@maxx - Absolutely, it's a great watch every week, and I've been enjoying it. However, unless a series that's shown us a handful of constructs—the most exciting being a digger—suddenly undergoes a huge tonal shift with Parallax, etc., then I can't see any other explanation than them tearing Hal down to build John up.

I get the impression Gunn and Lindelof really don't like Hal, and it's very obvious that Vanessa Baden Kelly doesn't. No wonder Josh Brolin passed on the role. It's almost a shame that Chandler has been so great, because he's wasted on a one-and-done like this. Fingers crossed the next three episodes surprise us.

@JoshWilding - ain’t gonna lie, I’m really liking this show a lot. But I do feel as if we should’ve gotten a prequel show focusing on Hal perhaps a few years as a Lantern before Sinestro betrays him to really see his descent and distrust of the Guardians.

I’ll use BvS as an example: to see Bruce that broken, we should’ve had a movie before BvS showing his descent as well. (Not saying it would’ve saved that movie).

Granted Kyle and Aaron are phenomenal in their roles.

@JoshWilding - I think most of you have missed something. There is a small moment, where John finds out Hal lost both parents. The reaction on John’s face, imo, reads like “Oh so you have had to struggle.” It contradicts what his parents taught him, that Hal only got the ring cuz he’s white and hasn’t had to know fear. And that small moment I think John realizes that his parents are wrong. And, even though this episode John says Hal doesn’t deserve the ring and Hal’s like “it chose me”, I think by the end of the season he will understand why the ring chose Hal and John will believe Hal does deserve it.

As for parallax, we don’t know to what extent they will show or if they will get there. But the foreshadowing is very very strong. In the last episode the green ‘O’ in the motel that we saw was pulsating white but with a tint of yellow because the “air conditioning” sign was still pulsating yellow. And I’ve rewatched those few seconds and I do think that’s foreshadowing yellow rings. There was also the yellowing of his suit that they changed in post, well in the prison scene with sinestro, under the blue light when Hal is standing at the door, his suit looked more yellow than green. Could say due to lighting that one was a bit more difficult to isolate the green hues of the suit to change like they did with previous shots or that they just left out that post edit. But I like to think that was more yellow lantern foreshadowing.

What I do believe 100%, we will see a different color lantern at the end of the show, and that will be the reason the show is called lanterns, and not “green lantern” or just singular “lantern.” The lack of color specificity and the plurality of the word in the title is to foreshadow the broader spectrum of lanterns.

whoknows - 9/14/2026, 2:57 PM
@Arthorious - you know, I get where you’re going but I don’t think that’s necessary. I think with time you can get all that backstory unfolding with the current story. If BVS’s Batman had more time and consistent writing in further movies, we could have gotten the joker Robin backstory. Same for hal, they are giving us the backstory simultaneously and that’s fine, as long as they get to it.

A good example, if you know the ASOIAF books, the main story sees a lot of repercussions of Roberts Rebellion. Some fans would say “man I want a Roberts rebellion show or book” that focuses on that period. For a show I can understand, the GOT show didn’t dive too much into the weeds of that backstory but in the books you get told the events of Robert’s rebellion from several characters and as the main story unfolds, so does Robert’s rebellion, simultaneously. So even George has responded to a prequel book question saying that he hopes when the story is finished, everyone will know so much about the rebellion, they don’t need a book focused on it. And even before I heard GRRM say that, that’s always been my sentiment. “I don’t need Robert’s rebellion, I’ve already been told so much about it.” I do get the wanting to see a younger hal, but it is what it is. The story is great so far and I don’t mind seeing a hero older than their prime because we don’t get that often and it’s a good opportunity to show how even when you lose strength and vigor when you get older, you could also gain wisdom from experience that makes you more strategic and efficient as hero.
Arthorious
Arthorious - 9/14/2026, 3:27 PM
@whoknows - that makes sense. Good story telling (not saying Lanterns lacks it significantly) doesn’t always need a prequel to set up events of the current story.

@JoshWilding - lindelof and King have a behavoir pattern, a modus operandi of altering legendary characters to fit their thesis. King with Wally West and Lindelof with Ozymandius. Now they're working together. They don't hate Hal they just want to tell a story about older white guys not wanting give young and/or black people a chance and don't care who gets dragged through the mud to get that point across.

So Hal , who was right most of the series about pretty much everything, been arguably the most charismatic oerson on the show (that flyboy persona yall love so much) who also has shown to be the only one willing to be truthful is being character assassinated cause he’s old? Burned out?

rockinsokinrobo - 9/14/2026, 2:02 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - that’s what I don’t get. The depth Hal shown and people don’t see it. Hal deduced the aliens and trying to keep his head clear dealing with sinestro. The ultimate betrayal and then knowing the guardians trying replace him.

-Hal been a detective this whole time
-Hal knew what the man Hunter was doing but he depleted his ring anyway. To protect the town.
-Hal was a tactician and detective
-Hal was scared of losing the ring so he went to his mentor. He knew John wasn’t backup.
How has this show assisinated his charcter?

Hal figured out where Abin sor was kill
Hal interrogated the alien into blowing himself up

Hal figured out the alien detector

John denied his tormentors wishes to become a lantern. his own parents that was fueled by the parents experience of racism

Hall faced his own tormentor Sinestro and denied what His mentor told him what to do.

Hal could have pushed John away vs shielding John even when John kicked him through the closet.

Josh u diminished everything Hal has done. I’m sorry u couldn’t see what Hal is doing in this show.

Hal” if he wanted me dead, I would be dead.”
Zoey “why did he bring you to me”
Hal”bait”

Hal misdirected Anton and reversed it on Anton about cortis with Macon!!!!!

@ShimmyShimmyYA -

Thank you. I like that I’m having discussion with my brother how the trauma affected both John and Hal.
I was upset Hal didn’t have the mask, then the show revealed Hal in full uniform all the hope then the cocky I don’t need a mask to the point he dispised the suit.

John trying to live up to his parents expectations and then this episode he chose himself over the expectation of his parents.
John was surgical about trapping Zoey. Did not deter even when the guardian played in John face.

Both John and Hal had their trails and then Josh to trivialize their journey😖😑
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 9/15/2026, 4:41 AM
@rockinsokinrobo - I think you've missed the point. Massively. This article isn't about Hal being a good detective. It's about how he's been portrayed, his actions—like the lengths he went to in order to keep his ring—and the way this show has torn him down to build John up, with no current indication that there will be any pay-off beyond him being killed. The article clearly explains that this all may be addressed in the coming episodes, but none of what you write is a good adaptation of the comics. It's just a character who made a few smart decisions and lied about [frick]ing William Macon.

But we got Kyle out of that story arc, maybe this is leading up to that as well.
