Lanterns Posters Spotlight Hal Jordan As Review Embargo And Possible Spoilers Land

New Lanterns posters put the spotlight on Hal Jordan (minus his costume), while we also have news on the show's review embargo and some potential spoilers for Sunday's pilot episode.

Two new posters for Lanterns have been released, and they put the spotlight squarely on the show's leads: Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). James Gunn has also shared a brief promo for the HBO series.

We can also tell you today that the review embargo for the DC Studios series lifts on Friday, August 14, at 12 pm ET. It appears only select press have been granted access to screeners, so don't expect a particularly wide range of reviews (we've seen the pilot, but can't reveal our verdict until Sunday night, as that was shared in advance of a press conference tomorrow).

We're going to get into potential spoilers at this point, so scroll down to those posters now if you don't want to see them.

Still here? Well, according to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, "John wears the ring but doesn't use it much in Lanterns Episode 1. There's a big twist at the end of [the episode], but I guess that’s already leaked. Laura Linney is a shapeshifting Guardian."

The big twist? That's likely a reference to last month's leaks, which claimed that Hal dies in the pilot. That started as an apparent fan theory, but was seemingly confirmed as legitimate when Warner Bros. Discovery started hitting X accounts with copyright strikes.

Only time will tell whether these rumours are correct, but it's not long until we find out on Sunday. There's also a behind-the-scenes photo floating around that confirms John Stewart finally suits up in episode 5 of Lanterns...

Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Alongside Kyle Chander and Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones round out the cast.

The pilot is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct.

Lanterns is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes, and is based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO on August 16.

I've seen Lanterns episode 1 ahead of a press conference, but I'm not allowed to publish a review until Sunday night. They've been very reluctant to send out screeners for more than the pilot, so don't expect many reviews on Friday. Can't say what I thought, but it seems only "select" critics got the first 4 episodes.

@JoshWilding - You probably only got 1 episode because your sight would probably post spoilers for all 4 episodes in 25 articles across 3 days!

I guess you should have done some shilling for supergirl 🤣

@krayzeman - LOL, I’ve never broken an embargo in my life. I only got the pilot because I have a press conference for the show tomorrow and Monday. They’re being super selective with review screeners, which is telling IMO.

@SenorTwats - That has crossed my mind, as they’ve been SUPER evasive. 🤣 I saw Grace Randolph say they’ve been selective with who gets screeners, though, so I’m expecting only friendly press to have seen the show. If I’m wrong and there are a bunch of reviews on Friday, then yeah, Gunn blacklisted me. 💀 I’ll praise him as a filmmaker until I’m blue in the face, but he can’t run a studio to save his life. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@JoshWilding - On a completely unrelated note, are there any classic comics that you think I should read this week?
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/12/2026, 4:29 PM
@InfinitePunches - Well, I can't think of any shows or movies coming up that have much in common with the comics, to be honest, but I'd always recommend Geoff Johns' Green Lantern run. That's what I'd want from an adaptation of that character...

@JoshWilding - With DD:BA season 2 you hinted at things in a way that gave it away, such as the timeline of events, like it wasn't as veiled a hint as you thought. I immediately got a sense of what would happen and it did.

Cool , looking forward to the show since I still have a feeling that this is gonna turn out to be very good but we’ll see!!.

Also given that there’s only one ring between John & Hal in this given in this version , the former was chosen personally by the Guardians and not a ring apparently then it makes sense he doesn’t wear it much aside from perhaps this scene where the latter “teaches” him on how to get out of a dangerous situation…

Oh and if true that John does wear his suit in ep 5 then that would be cool , especially since it’ll beat the trope of the hero getting their outfit in the last episode which would be nice & refreshing!!.

@TheVisionary25 - I guess...but...does beg the question though....Does everyone who is a Green Lantern have to make there own suits

I'm intrigued. I don't mind Hal dying because DCU already has Guy Gardner and doesn't need 3 different Green Lanterns. Gunn is woke-ish and wants a black Green Lantern. Plus Jon Stewart is a great character and worked so well in the Justice League cartoon, which was very good. I just hope they let Hal go out as a hero and do his character justice. As compelling as the Parallax story was, I don't want to see it Season 2 or really at all. Let's just have a good Green Lantern series and then have Jon be the eventual Justice League character if Gunn ever gets there with the DCU.

@UltimaRex -

I don’t think so. Let’s assume the next Superman movie is great. Yay! That would be very welcome.

But all of Gunn’s other ideas have died or flopped. And STILL no DCFU Batman.

I think Gunn will make maybe another Superman movie after next year. But I think he will be replaced as the head honcho in 2 years or so, hopefully by someone capable of that huge job.

@DocSpock - Ellison is STILL backing Gunn. He pretty clearly wants whatever BatB is.
