The Suicide Squad brought a lot of new and obscure villains into the DC Extended Universe, but it was John Cena's Peacemaker who arguably made the greatest impact. That no doubt explains why the former Task Force X member is now getting his own HBO Max series, but how can we be expected to root for Christopher Smith after he killed the heroic Rick Flag in cold blood?
The heinous act was all part of Smith's quest for peace at any cost, but this new clip from Peacemaker suggests what Smith did to the A.R.G.U.S. agent does not sit well with him.
It's a little surprising to see Peacemaker so emotional here, but we've heard a lot about this spinoff taking a deep dive into what makes this character tick in an effort to explain why his past actions were so despicable. In an interview with CBR, star John Cena actually opened up about getting to examine Smith's tough exterior and his inner vulnerabilities in the show.
"I think from Peacemaker's perspective, that persona is more boastful. I would see his perspective as the eyes of somebody in a first person shooter game, and that's why he gamifies his marksmanship and his skills," Cena explained. "I just think he is like most loud, brash individuals: they are putting up a front to defend from people to understanding who they really are."
In our review of tomorrow's three-part premiere, we said, "Peacemaker quickly establishes itself as essential viewing for fans of The Suicide Squad, but it's a career-best performance from John Cena and the greatest opening credits of all time that will make sure you want to come back each week."
