SWAMP THING Adds Academy Award Nominated CANDYMAN Star Virginia Madsen In A Key Role

DC Universe's Swamp Thing live-action series has added an Academy Award nominee to its ensemble cast in the form of Virginia Madsen (Candyman, Sideways), who will play Maria Sunderland. More past the jump.

As DC Universe continues to round out the cast of its upcoming Swamp Thing live-action series, the latest addition is Academy Award-nominee Virginia Madsen.

According to Deadline, Madsen will be playing Maria Sunderland, who does not appear to be an established DC Comics character.

Maria "traded in her privileged upbringing for the swamps of Marais when she married local business magnate Avery Sunderland (not yet cast), but Avery’s life-time obsession with the swamp has driven a wedge between him and Maria. Her poised existence is shaken further when the return of Abby Arcane reawakens a deep grief over the loss of Maria’s daughter, Shawna, drawing her into the dark supernatural mysteries emerging from the swamp."

Madsen is probably best know 'round these parts for her role in horror classic Candyman, but she was also nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Sideways. She can most recently be seen in season one of CBS drama, American Gothic.

Swamp Thing is being developed as a one-hour show, and has Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica) and Gary Dauberman (It) on board to write the pilot. They'll also executive produce alongside Michael Clear and James Wan. Len Wiseman will helm the first episode.

@GeneralZod - Except that's Adrienne Barbeau as Dexter Stanley's wife in Creepshow (I used to hang out in the neighborhood where that scene was shot.)

Should be noted, Madsen’s no stranger to DC lore herself—among her roles in DC-based pieces are:
-Gorilla Grodd’s accomplice Dr. Sarah Corwin on Justice League
-Roulette on Justice League Unlimited
-Hippolyta in the 2009 Wonder Woman animated film

Love Candyman hard (and she was great in it). It's one of those movies whose that are better than the source material.
The Forbidden by Barker, while an interesting little story, it's far from his best ones. Candyman adds interesting twist and turns to the tale and makes it better with it's love story theme of betrayal and madness.

I have not read much of Swamp Thing (I'm more a Marvel guy, and more a Man Thing fan personally), but will check this out because I love supernatural horror.

@Kleytus - funny thing is that it was based 8n cabrini green in chicago, at the time one of the most dangerous places in America to be...especially a white woman in at night. The story was really about a dealer/pimp and his drug addicted white girl. Very fascinating take on it.

@four20smoke - Hard reality turned into Urban Legend. Barker is a máster.
