SWAMP THING Adds Academy Award Nominated CANDYMAN Star Virginia Madsen In A Key Role
DC Universe's Swamp Thing live-action series has added an Academy Award nominee to its ensemble cast in the form of Virginia Madsen (Candyman, Sideways), who will play Maria Sunderland. More past the jump.
As DC Universe continues to round out the cast of its upcoming Swamp Thing live-action series, the latest addition is Academy Award-nominee Virginia Madsen.
According to Deadline, Madsen will be playing Maria Sunderland, who does not appear to be an established DC Comics character.
Maria "traded in her privileged upbringing for the swamps of Marais when she married local business magnate Avery Sunderland (not yet cast), but Avery’s life-time obsession with the swamp has driven a wedge between him and Maria. Her poised existence is shaken further when the return of Abby Arcane reawakens a deep grief over the loss of Maria’s daughter, Shawna, drawing her into the dark supernatural mysteries emerging from the swamp."
Madsen is probably best know 'round these parts for her role in horror classic Candyman, but she was also nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Sideways. She can most recently be seen in season one of CBS drama, American Gothic.
Swamp Thing is being developed as a one-hour show, and has Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica) and Gary Dauberman (It) on board to write the pilot. They'll also executive produce alongside Michael Clear and James Wan. Len Wiseman will helm the first episode.
