Netflix's THE SANDMAN Is Coming To Blu-ray Later This Year; Release Date And Special Features Revealed

The rise of streaming has made it something of a rarity for our favourite TV shows to be released on Blu-ray. That's proven to be heartbreaking for physical media collectors, though we are slowly starting to see the tide change (Disney, for example, will bring the likes of Loki and The Mandalorian to Blu-ray later this year).

Today, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that Netflix's The Sandman: The Complete First Season comes to Digital on September 18, 2023 and to 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on November 28, 2023.

Inspired by the iconic, award-winning DC comic book series, The Sandman follows Morpheus, also known as Dream, who is captured in an occult ritual in 1916 by Roderick Burgess.

Imprisoned for 106 years, Morpheus escapes only to return to his home, The Dreaming, to find his nightmares have also found their way out. Join the adventures of Morpheus as he sets out to stop the forces of evil destroying The Dreaming.

"Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, and already renewed for a second season on Netflix, The Sandman features an all-star cast which includes Tom Sturridge (Sweetbitter) as Morpheus/Dream, Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) as the Corinthian, Patton Oswalt (Eternals) as Matthew the Raven, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, David Thewlis (Fargo) as John Dee, Jenna Coleman (Victoria) as Johanna Constantine, and Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) as Lucifer Morningstar.

The series was developed by Neil Gaiman (American Gods), David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman). It was produced by Warner Bros. Television, based on the comic The Sandman by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for DC Comics.

Here are the official release details (we're sure some of you will be underwhelmed by the lack of special features).

Synopsis

Based on the beloved award-winning DC comic series written by Neil Gaiman, The Sandman: The Complete First Season is a rich, character-driven blend of myth and dark fantasy woven together over the course of ten epic chapters following Dream’s many adventures (plus a bonus episode featuring two fan-favorite stories). When the Sandman, a.k.a. Dream (Tom Sturridge) — the powerful cosmic being who controls all our dreams — is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for over a century, he must journey across different worlds and timelines to fix the chaos his absence has caused.

Release Date

The Sandman: The Complete First Season will be available on September 18, 2023 to purchase Digitally from Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, Vudu and more. 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD will be available to purchase online and in-store at major retailers on November 28, 2023.

This show was wicked good imo, however i never read the comics. I very much look forward to S2 and will def binge watch S1 before S2 comes out... in 2025 at this rate.

I'm surprised its on physical media so fast. Netflix usually doesn't let exclusives debut anywhere else for at least 2 years. Daredevil S3 never came out lol

@mastakilla39 - It's not one Netflix "owns". They are only airing it on their service. It's independently produced. Gaiman confirmed that if Netflix did not order a season 2, they are free to shop the show around.

Given how outspoken Gaiman has been about the show, it's unfortunate there isn't as least commentaries on these.

Was this show worth watching?
I hardly have time for tv but the premise intrigues me.

@HulkisHoly - It depends on your personal metric for 'worth watching'. It's more faithful to the comics than anyone expected; the by-product of many previous attempts to make it live action - which now look like dodged bullets. It's focus is primarily the psychological make-up/struggles of the main characters (as opposed to any big scale action set-pieces). The many quirks and loyalties of 'The Endless' keep you watching (who will triumph over who - and at what cost). Some of the CG backgrounds are rendered in a very basic fashion - but don't look shoddy and at times it feels more like watching an elaborate stage play (Gaiman's strength obviously is in his words) than a dynamic, physical adventure. But it's well worth the ride and totally different from other comic book adaptations.

@BillyBatson1000 -

Maybe I’ll give it a shot. Thanks 👍

[frick] yeah! I suspect this is less Netflix and more WB. They are among the last doing physical media more regularly than the others. Heck, there are some titles, like An American Pickle, that were made for HBO Max, are no longer available on Max, but can be bought as a DVD or Blu Ray.
