Alan Taylor On The Similarities Between THOR: THE DARK WORLD And GAME OF THRONES

Alan Taylor shares discusses the tonal similarities between Thor: The Dark World and Game of Thrones as well as why working on the HBO series made him the right man for the job in Kevin Feige's eyes. He also reveals that he more than likely won't be able to direct any season four episodes.

Many fans were disappointed when it was confirmed that Kenneth Branagh wouldn't be returning to helm the follow-up to THOR, but Game of Thrones fans knew that there was no need to worry when it was revealed that Alan Taylor would take the reigns. In the following video interview at this past weekend's D23 Expo, the director shares his thoughts on the similarities between the two beloved properties and what he's bringing from his experience working on the HBO series to the Marvel Studios movie. Disappointingly, he also reveals that his commitments to Thor: The Dark World will more than likely mean he won't be able to return for the highly anticipated fourth season.

Marvel’s "Thor: The Dark World" continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s "Thor" and "Marvel’s The Avengers," Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

STARRING:

Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Tom Hiddleston as Loki
Anthony Hopkins as Odin
Natalie Portman as Jane Foster
Zachary Levi as Fandral
Ray Stevenson as Volstagg
Tadanobu Asano as Hogun
Jaimie Alexander as Sif

I literally cannot wait any longer for this movie...

But I have no choice.

Really looking forward to see how Chris Eccleston handles Malekith, and I'm dying to get a better look at Kurse!

Also curious to see if the Kronans play a part(hopefully)

Still not sure if this can overtake The Wolverine as the best CBM of 2013...

@earz

Yes, Fox sucks, but remember there has been now 4 very good if not great X-Men or Wolverine movies.

So, let's not jump the gun, shall we??? I have very high hopes for X:DOFP, but my expectations are reserved a little.

Maybe they're NOT building to AoA, oh well, I'm sure there are plenty of other storylines to adapt that will likely work better on film than AoA. As much as I'd like to see it.

Here's hoping for the Kree/Skrull war!

Man of Steel is my CBM of the year thus far. Thor is my favorite comic book character of all time so I have very high hopes for this. I'm also a big GoT fan so Taylor is the man.

Of course this will stomp MoS. Superman is an outdated character with generally TERRIBLE movies.

@thewonderer

Compare Fox to Marvel Studios:

Result - Fox Sucks

But with the resurgence of Bryan Singer, who is a GREAT director (X1, X2, The Usual Suspects), and who also produced X:FC, Fox is taking steps in the right direction with the X-Men again.

X:DOFP will be awesome, and hopefully will renew everyone's faith in Bryan Singer, and the X-Men CBM's.

Not trolling here guys honestly but I don’t see the universal appeal to The Wolverine. I liked the movie but I didn’t love it. It was leagues better than XO:W but not as good as I wanted it to be.

@2Challa

I can see how it could be disappointing in certain aspects, depending on what exactly you wanted to get out of the movie. But for me, it completely restored my love for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. He always puts everything into the role, but this time he had a great storyline to follow, and was able to showcase more character development and the darker, sadder side of Wolvie.

Yes, the deviations from the comic arc can be a little distracting, and the Silver Samurai twist was not what I'm sure anyone hoped(too hokey for me). But as an overall stand alone film, it was extremely well made, and the performances across the board were top-notch. Especially Yukio, she was the highlight.

And that AoU avatar is sick dude! Was the best fan poster I've ever seen.

I got low expectation for this movie, nothin really exciting hasnt been shown yet. A little tired of Loki(still a great performance) but Thor 1 and Avengers, I really how they let other villains get more play, then turning it into the Loki movie. IM3 kind left a bad taste for so I hope Thor doesnt turn into a comedy. As much as I enjoyed Thor 1, i really thought the 2nd half of the movie was pretty weak, so i hope this movie will bring more action and less Earth.

Man of Steel is my movie of the Year. I'm pretty sure Thor: TDW will exceed MOS in story telling and I pray and hope that the spectacle can match or exceed MOS. Then I can finish out the year happy as a comic book movie fan.

Thank you MercwithaMouth. Really liked it.

I'll agree with everyone in saying X-Men origins was an atrocity. X3, while pretty bad, isn't horrifyingly so.

Still, I know Fox has had it's missteps. I'm actually a fan of the directors cut of Daredevil but I agree the FF4 movies are mediocre.

With everything Fox is doing now though, it all seems great.

- Bryan Singer on DOFP recreating a famous comic story (Yes there's changes, but everything is changed)

- Jeff Wadlow, a HUGE fan of X-Force, helming the film.

- Josh Trank, the guy who made the great Chronicle, on Fantastic Four.

As for now, don't see what's wrong with Fox.

Honestly, and I'm not trying to troll here, a lot of what Marvel Studios is doing has me concerned.

- Joss Whedons comments on Ultron
- Disputes with Alan Taylor on score and other things (not runtime but other things)
- Iron Man 3
- The amount of things lined up for Avengers 2

@Kyos yeah, the first thor was the phase one film that suffered the most from being rushed to hell cos of the impending avengers

asgard's scenes were mostly fine but the earth ones feel like they were done in 30 seconds. good scenography and acting from most of the cast was what made it cool anyway, bar natalie portman.

but it didnt reach greatness. so, lets hope this time they do.

@nach1wan

That about sums up my problems with the movie. I'd hoped for something like a Shakespearian drama set mostly in Asgard, with some added epic fantasy action and an appropriate dose of humor.

Instead we got lots of Earth, with extremely rushed character development, a rushed romance, lots of okay-ish jokes and, well, a joke of a fight.

It's not that I didn't like Thor, it just was far from the ,ovie I hoped it would be and believe it could've been.

@JoJo1982

I'm ridiculously curious about GOTG. The setting, the team, the cast - this could end up being anything from one of my favourite CBMs to a complete failure in my eyes. I'm hoping for the best of course, I just think it's an insane project. A superhero team movie set in space, with unknown characters including a tree and a racoon, and a cast that features the likes of Benicio del Toro, Vin Diesel and [frick]ing Glenn Close - what the hell?! :D

Agreed!!!

I think thats why i liked Incredible Hulk and Cap more.... cause i went in expecting exactly what it was supposed to be. Thor always lost me when it went to the jokes and Earth scene, also that to me was a big reason why GL failed.
