Carice Van Houten Defends The Plentiful Nudity On GAME OF THRONES

Melisandre actress Carice Van Houten has defended the regular instances of people getting butt nekkid on the show. She also teases a little of what we can expect from her character in season 4.

HBO's Game Of Thrones has come in for a fair bit of criticism for it's liberal use of sex and nudity, but one actress from the show definitely doesn't see what all the fuss is about. While attending a press event in London to promote Season 4 of Game Of Thrones, Carice van Houten (Melisandre) was quick to jump to the defense of the series when asked about the bare skin on display. “We can see machine guns but we can’t see f**king – sorry – people? I really don’t get, I have to make a point here. Who sleeps with their bra on? I mean, sorry if that’s a Dutch approach but I think we need to get used to it. It’s part of life.” Whatever your views on the amount of nudity, she's right -- we can see shootings, blood, guts, severed heads and disembowelments all day long and nobody bats an eyelid; but if someone gets their kit off there's uproar! Van Houten also comments on where we'll find her character in season 4, admitting that we won't see quite as much of Melisandre as last year (boo!) “Stannis has a light season this year but we have a few meaty scenes", she promises. "Our storyline is going to move somewhere else and it’s going to be interesting because it’s going to collide with a world which we also know, and what’s going to happen there.” More at the link below.

It sounds like you are jumping to conclusions that her words do not suggest. In no way does she indicate that either is suitable for children.

She's not talking about what is and isn't suitable viewing for kids..she's talking about the adult's reactions to it. I think it goes without saying that nobody should be letting their children watch Game Of Thrones!

@ Alpha

Those are the keys to a successful movie or show on cable

1. Sex
2. Nudity
3. Violence

I like nudity when it's called for. Shower scene...*Shrugs shoulders* Thats actually the only scenario I can think of nudity being involved in. But I have yet to watch something where nudity serves a purpose. I feel like nudity is just something where it's like "Hey, we can do this and get away with it."

Yes! You tell 'em girl.
I hate seeing clothed sex on TV it's just stupid.

I'm just going to say this, sex is much, much, much less worse than graphic violence. Kids shouldn't be exposed to either though. That's how they lose their innocence, which is not good.

That is actually what happened to Gusto when he watched Caged Heat at the age of 10... ;P

Her point is that one thing is completely natural and something we all do (whenever possible) , the other is VIOLENT MURDER! And more people tend to have a bigger problem with the latter than the former on tv shows and in movies. And I think we can all agree that's a bit mental.

I have sex fully clothed. What, am I the minority?

I kid, sex and cleaning yourself. Only reason for nudity in my humble opinion.

"She's not talking about what is and isn't suitable viewing for kids..she's talking about the adult's reactions to it. I think it goes without saying that nobody should be letting their children watch Game Of Thrones!"

Exactly! Stop putting words in her mouth to satiate your conservative viewpoint of her statement.

Also, this proves that not every women is ashaed of the human body. If she is proud of her artistic expression, a tastefully, faithful adaptation of a costume like Wonder Woman's shouldn't be so fiercely debated. It's just bare legs after all...

I've never had a problem with sex and nudity on screen and GoT uses it occasionally for story telling purposes or character development.

BUT

There seem to be a hell of a load of times when it's just there to jazz up a boring exposition (or Sex Position and it's dryly been called) scene.
CherryBomb
CherryBomb - 2/13/2014, 8:16 AM

@kevberg

I agree in some sense but at the time when the story is set sex was brutal, especially with soldiers and warriors with all their anger. And it's also loving too, they explore both sides. It was a dark time.
