Speaking to the LA Times, GRRM stated that despite the acclaim and pomp surrounding HBO's visualization of his novels and the memorable performances of the cast, he still has a firm, independent mental image of who the characters are. Specifically speaking on Peter Peter Dinklage's performance, who just picked up a Golden Globe for his role as Tyrion, Martin had the following to say about his impact on Tyrion, ""Not Peter specifically," Martin said. "Peter is very close to the character described in the books."

However, Martin did state that actress Natalia Tena who portrays Osha has had a profound impact on his take on the character. "[GRRM] said he went from thinking she was "completely wrong" for the role to now finding her "mesmerizing," and he promised that the character is coming back."

Except for that exception, Martin stated that"these characters are "firmly fixed in my head. I've been living with them off and on since 1991. It's hard to displace them."

Fun Fact: While at the Globes, Martin commented that he was in the exact same room that he was in back in the 80's when Ron Perlman won a Golden Globe for his role in ABC's Beauty and the Beast.

I was really happy for Peter when I saw he won. His character is truly awesome. I'm about halfway through the 2nd book and he's my favorite so far (Tyrion)!

Congratulations Peter, you deserve it!

@GUNSMITH - Thank you for that, you made my day. I hate that whiney little brat, although I guess I'm supposed too.

Peter is an excellent actor and my favorite character in the novels/show. I'm so happy he's getting a more important role this season, where he gets to flex his intellectual muscles...Can't wait til it starts back up again.
