SNOW: Kit Harington Says GAME OF THRONES Sequel Series Is Officially "Off The Table"

A Game of Thrones sequel series focusing on Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen was in development at HBO, but star Kit Harington has now confirmed that the project is no longer moving forward...

We figured this might be the case after updates began to freeze up, and we now have confirmation that HBO's planned Game of Thrones sequel series following the continuing adventures of Jon Snow - real name Aegon Targaryen - has been shelved.

Actor Kit Harington, who was set to reprise his role as the honourable "bastard" of Winterfell turned rightful heir to the Iron Throne, revealed that the show will not be moving forward while speaking to Screen Rant.

“Currently, it’s off the table because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough," Harington explained. "So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”

Harington had previously been somewhat tight-lipped about the potential spin-off during interviews, and he notes that this was because "I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen."

Though a creative team was never made public, A Song of Ice and Fire saga writer George R.R. Martin revealed that the project did have writers and a showrunner attached on his personal blog last year.

“Yes, it was Kit Harington who brought the idea to us. I cannot tell you the names of the writers/ showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.”

Though the final season of Game of Thrones does have its share of defenders, it was widely considered to be a disappointing swansong for the mega-popular fantasy drama series. The final two episodes, in particular, came in for a lot of backlash thanks to some highly controversial creative decisions, one of which saw fan-favorite Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) "break bad" by laying waste to King's Landing and the thousands of innocent people who lived there just so she could take her revenge on Cersi Lannister (Lena Headey).

Then, in the series finale, Jon Snow killed his lover/aunt when he realized that she'd succumbed to madness. He admitted his crime, but escaped execution and was sent back to The Wall. The last time we saw Jon, he was leading the remaining members of the Night's Watch beyond the Wall into Wildling territory.

It's a shame that Snow (working title) won't be moving forward, but perhaps Harington and HBO will come up with a story worth telling down the line.

I may have been in the minority but I had no interest in this project. I feel like it was HBO's way of trying to reboot the ending of Game of Thrones. The hype came and went. Let House of Dragons do it's thing now.

@nibs - It was the only spin-off I was looking forward to. Not fussed about prequels.

Good. This spin off did not sound interesting at all. Personally, I’d prefer if only books that have been written by George RR martin are adapted, but we know Hollywood needs their endless content machines and they never let franchises die.

Bring on more House of the Dragon and the Hedge Knight adaptation. Besides that, don’t care.

Can anyone honestly say how this could have gone? They already squandered Jon's storyline with the garbage handling of his resurrection, his military strategics, his Targaryen reveal the White Walkers and NK in S8, not to mention banishing and disinheriting him from everything connecting him to both his Stark and Targaryen heritages in his exile, what worthy story is left to tell? There's no undoing the slop that was S7 (yes Season 7) and especially S8, although the quality of the show went to crap slowly after S4.

They already knew it would've been a tough sell to make a convincing new story to give Jon purpose again.

@TheLight - Thousand ways it could have gone with free reign and a good writing team but there was no real solid starting point or destination to build from leading out of the end of GoT so wasn't surprised they were looking at what they could do with the character (esp considering he was the only one left that could come back as a Dragon Rider) and zero surprise they didn't come up with a strong enough story to go with.

And that was the problem. The series literally ended with putting Jon in the biggest of corners and it didn't have to end like that. I'm just hoping if/when we do get the books, Jon's return will bring some new and intriguing stuff to his character.

Good. As illustrated by that drawing of the horse, the quality of the series really went downhill by the end. And I'd rather not have it continue from there.

Now if we ever actually get the final book, and they make a sequel series about that...

GRR Martin had YEARS to finish the series, do D&D had to improvise the ending that almost everyone hated. I blame that fat bastard lol also 3 Body Problem is amazing! So Benioff and Weiss are masterful at adapting books, at least this series is actually complete lol

@bobevanz - I think it's clear they can adapt content into digital media. That said that doesn't make them rushing the final seasons and delivering such a mediocre product any better.

They should have handed off the reigns if they were done

That's too bad. I wanted to see what coudl happen with Jon Snow living among the Wildings.

I think he would've evenutally been the "king byond the Wall".

@Nomis929 - This is what I NEVER understood and people continue to vouch for this. Since he never wanted a crown, according to S6 and S8, why would he want to be king beyond the Wall? The ending never to me felt like it was Jon getting his ending. For all we know he was merely escorting the Freefolk back home, maybe he'll stay with them for a time, but not forever. In truth, it should be Tormund leading them.

@TheLight - I don't think he wanted to be king for the people of Westeros, whom he really couldn't identify with although he the true heir, but since he was aways looked down for most of his life becasue of their prejudical bloodline traditions and the situation he was born in as a bastard it wouldn't appeal to him to lead.

But Jon Snow identified with the freefolk (Wildings) and I think was envious of their freedom of not having the stigma that was placed upon him in Westeros and identiy with their society more and would feel obligated and even happy to be their king.

@Nomis929 - same here. The whole John at the Wall was my favourite storyline in GoT, so I did wanma see more of that. King beyond the Wall sounds pretty cool too

@Nomis929 - "But Jon Snow identified with the freefolk (Wildings) and I think was envious of their freedom of not having the stigma that was placed upon him in Westeros and identiy with their society more and would feel obligated and even happy to be their king."

That only explains him potentially wanting to live among them, not lead them.
