Joss Whedon Presents Marvel's AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

Genre poster boy Joss Whedon speaks on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The first synapse for a Marvel television show came from Disney CEO Bog Iger after watching the Marvel One-Shot, Item 47.

“Last spring, [Disney top executive] Bob Iger sent us some bonus footage from The Avengers, with a simple question, ‘Is there a show here? said ABC president Paul Lee. Reports say, Iger saw the Marvel short Item 47 and the impression it left on Disney's CEO was the genesis for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Standing on stage before the media at the ABC Upfront Joss Whedon began, "I’ll be brief. I was born…," to a smattering of chuckles that then turned into widespread laughter when he quickly deadpanned, "I wasn’t born. I was grown in a lab… and fed on Marvel Comics — and that turned out OK for me." Whedon kept the presentation moving, stating that "[The Avengers] worked because everyone felt included, " and said that he hopes to bring that same sense of inclusion to the new television show. On actor Clark Gregg, Whedon couldn't resist another joke, saying Gregg's "an actor so talented even I couldn’t kill him [so] I built S.H.I.E.L.D. around him."

Catch Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this Fall on ABC; Tuesdays at 8 PM.

Joss Whedon On How The S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Show Fits With THE AVENGERS

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films, as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson's team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage; Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot and martial artist; Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer; and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker, Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s first television series, is from executive producers Joss Whedon (Marvel's The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who co-wrote the pilot (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) also serve as executive producers. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

I just watched that without sound. Any indication as to J. August Richards' character?

Show looks promising.

(I feel like you didn't mean 'synapse' but I could be wrong)

@BizarroGrif Multiple people are running with the assumption that J. August Richards's character is Rage of the New Warriors.

@Trip

Cheers mate, that's news to me. Last I heard people were still banging on about him being Cage.

Was that metal arm thing Richards then? I thought that might be a give away to some of the more knowlegable guys on here...

'Synopsis', perhaps? Surely not 'synapse.'
For comic book readers, some of you sure do have a difficult time with spelling and grammar...

Funny to mock Coulson for being a creepy fanboy on a web site catered to creepy fanboys.

@76cidgrad synapse: In the nervous system, a synapse permits a neuron (or nerve cell) to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another cell (neural or otherwise).

Don't be that guy.

@DarkKnight23 - the nice part was exactly seeing a cold agent like him having a fanboy attack when meeting his idol. I tought it was a nice touch and says a lot about the character.

hate to break it to y'all, but this show is supposed to be it's own thing & will likely feature a few cameos from the marvel universe, but not tie too directly.

@BizarroGrif I believe that J. August Richards' character is Elijah Bradley a.k.a. Patriot from the Young Avengers. The tech on his arm could be a device that delivers his power producing drugs to his body. Also, in the three minute promo when Skye mentions S.H.I.E.L.D. he thinks she means that he should use an actual shield, which I think is allusion to his character.

Also, it would be great if this were true because they could do a few story arcs off it; i.e. power producing drugs, grandfather Isiah Bradley a.k.a. black captain america

The people that have been banging on the visual effects of an episode preview that was likely cobbled together before post-production was even finished on it amuse me to no end.

I hope it's not alien tech, and more like what @ajrmarvel mentioned. Let the movies expand on the Sci-fi and the show bring in ground-level heroes.

LOL Joss is great.

Seems like we get a MAoS article almost everyday. Excellent. It's only going to get more amped up from here once the real promo starts. Can't wait for the TV spots.

Hey, does anyone know if Marvels use of all their characters is OK to use on the small screen? I know there hands are tied for use of some characters in movies. But T.V. could be a whole different thing. Just wondering.
