THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER VFX Supervisor Reveals How Ayo Was Able To Remove Bucky's Arm

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier VFX Supervisor Eric Leven has shared an explanation for how Dora Milaje member Ayo was so easily able to remove Bucky's Wakandan-made Vibranium arm. Check it out...

Marvel Studios has shared a new behind-the-scenes video for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier which features VFX Supervisor Eric Leven discuss a moment in the Disney+ series that definitely got fans talking.

In Avengers: Infinity War, T'Challa presented Bucky with a new arm, but in the show, Dora Milaje member Ayo removed the metal appendage from the former HYDRA assassin with ease.

Many fans were shocked that a failsafe would be included and questioned why the Wakandans wouldn't trust the White Wolf. VFX Supervisor Eric Leven doesn't address that here, but did confirm Ayo was able to so easily remove the arm because of a secret only its creators were privy to.

"Since it was a Wakandan arm, the Wakandans put a little failsafe in there so that if they ever got in a situation, like they did, they were able to hit a little code in the magic arm so it would pop off," he explained. "There's some magical pressure point here (gestures to shoulder), a magical button that's going to detach his arm. Ayo knows where that is."

We can't help but wonder if there's a similar failsafe in Sam Wilson's Captain America costume, but given Bucky's past, it's no great surprise that the Wakandans were cautious when it came to the Winter Soldier. As for Levy, he was just concerned about how the deactivation of the arm would look on screen.

"We ended up doing a very, very subtle light inside around his shoulder," he said, "and then a very subtle light that travels down his arm. It's a blink and you'll miss it kind of thing."

I'm just surprised they actually had a rubber sleeve for Stan to wear as reference

@bkmeijer - They've actually been doing that for Civil War, and they usually look quite good. They'd totally get away with them for wide shots where Bucky is far enough away from camera. But they do fold and bend funny when he moves tbf.

Who cares. Yes he would be fighting with one arm less but his power isn’t in his one arm. I don’t understand why they made Bucky so uninteresting fight wise. I love his character but in the fight scene’s hé just punches and that’s it. I feel like in The Winter Soldier where he was the villian they cared a lot more about making him appear as a bad-ass with the guns and grappling gun. I can’t be the only one who feels like this right? He got a Wakandian arm but it’s just that, a arm. Put some bad ass ability’s in that thing. Who cares if it isn’t comic book accurate. They could make it like Jax in MK11, the more he uses it the more it powers up and stronger it becomes. Kind it like Black Panther’s suit. This was one of the reasons I was hoping he would become Captain America instead of Falcon. It would hide his identity and it would give him the shield for bad ass moments. Obviously after watching the show I feel they made the right decision with Sam but do hope they’ll do more interesting stuff with Bucky.

@MarcianooM - I noticed in the show they seemed to be purposely making him hesitant in the fights. I imagine they were trying to show him not wanting to go full winter soldier so from a character perspective it’s completely understandable but he did have better fight scenes while full Winter Soldier.

So in theory the Wakandians could do the same with Sam and his new suit...or at lease the wings?

@rAd1 - in theory they can make his redwings turn against him or maybe his jetpack takes where ever they want.

The negligence regarding the characterization of Bucky is right on the verge of entering Hulk and Thor levels of mishandling IMO.

Yeah, the fail safe made sense, but given the trust issues Bucky has had over the years you really feel just how he hurt he is after his attempts to reform. Damn good acting by Stan.

The failsafe makes sense but it still hurts for Bucky. That lack of full trust.

@BlackBeltJones - Well theoretically there could still be HYDRA programming in him that they missed.

Dora Milaje or not, removing an amputee's prosthetic is a shitty thing to do.
