THE FALCON & THE WINTER SOLDIER Has Been Rated 16+ (TV-MA) In The Netherlands

Well, this is interesting. Following the recent trailer for The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, it's come to light that the Disney+ series has been rated 16+ - the equivalent of a TV-MA - in the Netherlands.

Could The Falcon and The Winter Soldier end up being the first Marvel Studios project to carry the TV equivalent of an R-rating?

When the new trailer debuted during the Super Bowl this past Sunday night, a Dutch Redditor did some digging and discovered that the Disney+ series has been rated 16+ (TV-MA) for "violence and bad language" in the Netherlands.

You might be thinking that Kijkwijzer (the Dutch age rating board for film and television) simply applies stricter ratings to the content that screens there, but most previous Marvel Studios productions have been rated 12+. The only exceptions have been the now defunct Netflix shows such as Daredevil and Jessica Jones, which were all more adult-oriented than the usual Marvel fare.

Does this mean we can expect higher levels of violence in TFATWS? Well, remember the behind-the-scenes footage that found its way online last year of John Walker (Wyatt Russel) brutally beating one of the Flag-Smashers to death with Captain America's shield? There could be a very good reason for that 16+ rating!

We'll have to wait and see if the show does end up being rated TV-MA in the States, but it seems like a strong possibility.

We'll update you guys when we learn more. For now, you can have another look at the new trailer below.

Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier. The pair, who came together in the final moments of “Avengers: Endgame,” team up on a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience. Directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman serving as head writer, the series also stars Daniel Brühl as Zemo, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker.

TFATWS is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 19.

I'm not convinced at all that it will get a rating so high here, but more and more I am liking the tone this show seems to have!

@Armageddon26 - Is 'here' America? We're generally more predisposed to violence than than a lot other countries. What's one lower, 14?

@inkniron - Here in the UK we have 12,15 and 18.

Deadpool & Venom was a 15 here.

@marvel72 - Theatrically we have the good G, PG, 13, & R(17). The tv side i think it's 7,14 & 18. It's all a suggestion anyway. I'm all for limited censorship, but it's really in the parents'/guardians' hands, like it should be. My parents let me watch A Nightmare on Elm Street(R) when I was 7 and it didn't affect me nearly as much as Poltergeist(PG) when I was 6. I watched a lot of those R 80's action movies and was fine with it. My parents were more vigilant about their nudity than the over the top violence. Just know your kids and their limitations I guess.

@inkniron - How is the original Poltergeist a PG? I think I was 11 or 12 when we rented the VHS and my mum said there is no way I am letting you watch that.
My Dad was cool he let me watch Enter The Dragon when I was 11 and First Blood.

@marvel72 - I don't think they had the PG13 rating when it first came out. The dude ripping off his own face should have been enough for an R. They've definitely gotten more strict

@MrCamw1 - The Netherlands reminds of the Nether Realms. Or Nether Regions.

@CorndogBurglar - you're not wrong with Nether Regions, since in Dutch it's Nederland, and neder is just another worth for lower. So yeah, it's a lower region

Disney is shutting down one of its animation studios

Honestly are we loosing much, not like Ice Age was ever anything up to par. Think i only ever saw the first one

@dracula - Makes sense. They already have WDAS and Pixar for theatrical releases. And they both still have distinct identities (for the most part).

A third animation studio can be used for more adult-oriented content, but I'm not sure that's even in their horizons.

@dracula - Pretty sure that was one acquired in the Fox merger. At least that's where I have it on my hard drive.

No way will this be TV-MA in the U.S. It's going to be TV-14 at most.

I can’t [frick]ing wait for this show. The production quality of the MCU Disney shows is unreal it feels like watching a movie. I’m still not a huge fan of the week to week release schedule (I know I know I get why they do it don’t bother with the comments lol) but these seemingly being a little longer than WandaVision and it not being as based in mystery could make that a bit less of a negative this time around. Overal I can’t wait I’ve been starved of MCU and specifically the Captain America storylines for too damn long
