THE FALCON & THE WINTER SOLDIER Has Been Rated 16+ (TV-MA) In The Netherlands

Well, this is interesting. Following the recent trailer for The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, it's come to light that the Disney+ series has been rated 16+ - the equivalent of a TV-MA - in the Netherlands.

Could The Falcon and The Winter Soldier end up being the first Marvel Studios project to carry the TV equivalent of an R-rating?

When the new trailer debuted during the Super Bowl this past Sunday night, a Dutch Redditor did some digging and discovered that the Disney+ series has been rated 16+ (TV-MA) for "violence and bad language" in the Netherlands.

You might be thinking that Kijkwijzer (the Dutch age rating board for film and television) simply applies stricter ratings to the content that screens there, but most previous Marvel Studios productions have been rated 12+. The only exceptions have been the now defunct Netflix shows such as Daredevil and Jessica Jones, which were all more adult-oriented than the usual Marvel fare.

Does this mean we can expect higher levels of violence in TFATWS? Well, remember the behind-the-scenes footage that found its way online last year of John Walker (Wyatt Russel) brutally beating one of the Flag-Smashers to death with Captain America's shield? There could be a very good reason for that 16+ rating!

We'll have to wait and see if the show does end up being rated TV-MA in the States, but it seems like a strong possibility.

We'll update you guys when we learn more. For now, you can have another look at the new trailer below.

Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier. The pair, who came together in the final moments of “Avengers: Endgame,” team up on a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience. Directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman serving as head writer, the series also stars Daniel Brühl as Zemo, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker.

TFATWS is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 19.
