We had heard that Marvel might be developing an Ironheart series for Disney+, and the news was confirmed during Disney's recent Investors Day, along with the announcement that If Beal Street Could Talk actress Dominique Thorne would be taking on the lead role of Riri Williams.
Now, Thorne has spoken about landing the part during an interview with Empire to promote the now Oscar-nominated Judas and the Black Messiah, and while she obviously couldn't say too much, she did reveal that Marvel approached her for the project and she was not required to audition.
“I was at home in Delaware and I got a call asking if I would like to play this role,” she says. “It was the best phone call I could have ever received. I was so shocked, in fact, that there was a considerable lag in the conversation!” she continues. "I was waiting for them to say, like, ‘Oh, we’ll send you the sides’, or, ‘Get your tape over to us.’ But there was none of that. It was just like, ‘Would you like to do this?’ It was probably the most unique experience I’ve ever had because there was no audition at all.”
It certainly sounds like Thorne was Marvel's first and only choice to play Williams.
We really don't know a whole lot about Ironheart at this early stage, but the show is expected to stick pretty closely to Riri's comic book origin as "the creator of the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man." Will she ultimately take over from Tony Stark as the MCU's Armored Avenger? It seems like a safe bet.
