Loki season 1 remains one of the best stories told by Marvel Studios during its hit-and-miss Phase 4, and despite a change in the creative team, there's a huge amount of excitement for season 2. We expect that to set the stage for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty in a big way, and one of the show's leads has now teased the scale of that next batch of episodes.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays the villainous Judge Ravonna Renslayer in the series, and comic book fans know that she has a long, complicated romantic history with Kang the Conqueror.
In the finale, Ravonna left the TVA in an effort to discover the truth about its formation, something we have to believe will lead to her meeting one of Kang's Variants. The results of that could be seismic for the MCU, and Mbatha-Raw opened up about working on Loki season 2 while talking to Entertainment Tonight.
"It's been amazing to shoot the second season of Loki," she says, adding that fans "are gonna be in for a real treat because the show is bolder and more surreal. And in many ways, goes to some bigger, bolder places than season 1, which is really exciting."
"In Loki, Ravonna is a powerful presence," the actress teased, saying that in season 2, "selfishly, Renslayer makes it out of the TVA, which I'm really excited about."
"The thing that I found with Loki's second season is everyone on the crew knows your character and I've never had that before, stepping onto a set where people already know your character. That's kind of a cool feeling."
We have no real idea what to expect from Ravonna in season 2, but it definitely sounds like Loki is about to dramatically increase its stakes (no easy feat when season 1 introduced the concept of the Multiverse). A first look at the show is probably still months away but, as always, we'll keep you updated.
Loki season 2 premieres on Disney+ next year.
