BLACK PANTHER Star Chadwick Boseman Wins Posthumous Emmy For His Performance In WHAT IF...? BLACK PANTHER Star Chadwick Boseman Wins Posthumous Emmy For His Performance In WHAT IF...?

During last night's Creative Arts Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, the late Chadwick Boseman was awarded a posthumous Emmy for his performance as T'Challa in the first season of What If...? on Disney+.

Wakanda Forever.

The loss of Chadwick Boseman shocked the world, especially as the actor had kept his lengthy battle with cancer a secret. Perhaps best known for playing T'Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he left an indelible mark on that franchise with phenomenal performances in Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, and the last two Avengers movies.

One of his final roles, however, was Disney+'s animated What If...? Returning as T'Challa in an episode that saw the Wakandan become Star-Lord in place of Peter Quill, Boseman delivered another fantastic take on a character he's made entirely his own.

Now, that's been recognised by the Emmys. Last night, Boseman was awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for his role as Star-Lord T'Challa in What If...?, and we'd say it was well-deserved.

It's a real tragedy that he wasn't here to accept that and to continue playing the character moving forward. This Star-Lord Variant was such a hit with fans, we can't help but think there's a chance the hero would have eventually joined Hayley Atwell's Captain Carter by appearing in live-action.

"Boseman was clearly having an absolute blast playing this version of the hero," we said in our review of the episode, "and his performance is nothing short of perfect. Boseman takes us along for this ride in a way that will remind you just what a special talent he was."

What If...? will return to Disney+ for a second season next year, while Marvel Zombies (which spins out of the events of season 1) is also on the way. Boseman only recorded material for the show's first batch of episodes, so we sadly won't be treated to any future performances from the late actor.

... Why? It wasn't really a good episode.

I really loved the whole series. I thought the art was beautiful and it was great the way all the episodes coalesced . I particularly enjoyed the voice work. Bozeman's alternative take on tchalla was refreshing, but I relished Micheal Douglas's unhinged Hank pym

Should have gone to Cumberbatch.

@marvel72 - Nah, his episode was the best of the season, but his delivery was pretty clunky.

@FinnishDude - Nah brah. His scream alone during the part Christine dies was award worthy alone. But who cares about awards anyway. Just pointing out you're wrong. Like very wrong.

Honestly I think this is one of those cases of "he died so let's honor him" awards. It was fun for what it was but nothing really that special if you take into account what professional voice actors can do.

@Origame - Give it to someone who can still appreciate it.

@marvel72 - I wouldn't say that. Like, if it was genuinely the best performance then yeah give it to him. But if an award is going out it shouldn't be awarded simply because it is post mortem. They can recognize his amazing life in other ways.

@Origame - I agree.

@marvel72 - So they shouldn't have given Heath his Oscar just because he couldn't appreciate it?

@LongMayHeReign - No Heath got it when he died, Chadwick is still winning awards year or more after his death.

@LongMayHeReign - I actually looked it up 2 years after his death, you'd think it was more recent.

@marvel72 - No, Heath died over a year before he was awarded the posthumous Oscar. So by your view, he shouldn't have received that either.

@marvel72 - Although the question still stands...Do you think Heath shouldn't have gotten his Oscar just because he couldn't appreciate it?

Posthumous awards always sit a little weird with me. A lot of times they aren't even close to the best performance, but nobody says anything because they don't like to talk ill of the dead.

I can't say for sure about this one because honestly, I have no idea who else was nominated and really don't follow the voice over category at all. I did see his performance and it was...okay.

@inkniron - I tend to agree. But. I would make an exception for Heath Ledger’s Joker. That was unquestionably worthy of his Oscar.

@Tasmaniac - The only person of the lot nominated that year that was really Oscar worthy was Philip Seymour Hoffman for “Doubt”.

The rest were just okay, including Robert Downey Jr.‘a nomination for Tropical Thunder.

@SpaceParanoids - Agree to disagree on that one. Ledger’s Joker was a textbook example of inhabiting a character, and differentiating it from all who came before. Not that it’s Oscar relevant, but still far and away the definitive live action Joker IMO.
SpaceParanoids
SpaceParanoids - 9/4/2022, 8:34 AM
@Tasmaniac - I should have said “the only other person” because Ledger was Oscar worthy.

@Tasmaniac - Let me ask you a question and answer honestly please. If Ledger hadn't died, would he have gotten that oscar ? For me it's 100% NO. A big fat no.

I think CBM have had oscar worthy performances such as Ledger and the cast of Logan, but only Ledger got it because he died. If Jackman had died during that time he would have gotten the award as well. I just cannot stand these award shows awarding people who passed away. It's incredibly insulting.

@Typhoon20 - No, He would not have gotten it. It most likely would have gone to Philip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt.
Tasmaniac
Tasmaniac - 9/4/2022, 5:11 PM
@Typhoon20 - Honestly? No. But not for the reason you think. He wouldn’t have got it for the same reason TDK didn’t get nominated for Best Picture: Oscar snobbery. He absolutely deserved it, as did the movie. Rightly or wrongly, the fact that he died made the pompous Academy actually sit there and think about it for a minute. Ledger’s performance was 50% of what carried a massive movie. His award paved the way for the acceptance of CBMs. Prior to that CBMs were given crumbs from the table like nominations for special effects.

@Lokiwasright - in this case, it'd be nice if Lokiwasright.

Could you imagine:
Crisis on Infinite 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎 🌎

Adam West with Frank Miller screenplay design for a Dark Knight World Steve Buscemi as Joker.

Heath Ledger-Joker returns taking down Robert Pattinson Batman.

Michael Keaton taking on the Mantle of mentor for the Batman Beyond.

Tom welling meets Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routhe playing Cyborg Superman, Henry Cavill making headlines with questionable returns... 🤔 oh wait.

That'd be nice.

Why did no one from Arcane get nominated? I feel like there might be even more worthy choices in that one.
