WHAT IF...? Writer Teases "Weirder, Wilder" Season 2 And Reveals More About The Delayed 10th Episode

What If...?'s first season was originally going to be 10 episodes long, but thanks to the pandemic, it was shortened to 9 (the second season is now also expected to run for the same length). There are just two instalments left before this first batch of episodes concludes, and Head Writer A.C. Bradley teased what's next for the animated series during a recent interview with Deadline

"Season 2 is a lot of fun," the executive producer tells the trade. "The training wheels come off, and we get to do a little bit weirder, wilder. There’s one episode which is probably the closest to my own personality I’ve ever written. It’s heartfelt. It’s full of action and bad ‘90s clothing choices."

That mention of the 1990s is definitely interesting, and could be an indication that we'll be revisiting the events of Captain Marvel. After all, that movie is the most time we've spent in that decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it's also possible we could head to a timeline where Howard and Maria Stark weren't assassinated by The Winter Soldier. Time will tell on that front.

Elsewhere in the interview, Bradley confirmed that the episode pushed from season 1 to season 2 is a full-blown comedy. "We did have another comedy episode in the season, more in the pure comedy vein, which is the one that has been pushed to season 2 due to COVID production issues." For those who feel there's already been too much comedy in What If...?, that might be a relief to hear.

Following last week's cliffhanger and lots of crossover teases in the trailers, it's certainly going to be pretty interesting to see what Marvel Studios delivers over the next two weeks.

As for season 2 of What If...?, we're anticipating it arriving sometime in 2022.

The comedy was best in the T’Challa Star Lord episode. More of that please. It was natural, it never interrupted the tension when it wasn’t supposed to. And it was ACTUALLY FUNNY.

@PantherKing - That episode was fantastic! My favorite part was how frantically Thor wiped off the graffity off of the Washington Monument before his mother arrived. XD

Would love to see them introduce new stuff/elements into the MCU in season 2 instead of the usual "what if this happened instead of this"

Season 2 should be a ''what if'' storyline of something new in multiple episodes instead of doing the same with some not that interesting differences from movies they done that feels just the same over and over again without much development..

Even though a lot of episodes end on a cliffhanger or a set-up for a sequel episode, I do hope season 2 just keeps doing new episodes that aren't follow-ups

@RevanOfKrypton - I enjoyed this show to some degree, but just don't find it funny anymore (the bromance joke wore itself out a season ago, imo) or engaging (coming into the sombre home-straight, struggling to get to the end): though that might be due to gaps between watching the seasons, so literally disengaged.

Maybe I'll get round to finishing season 3: it's a pretty good show all-in all; Well written (if not a bit predictable), good animation, great voice-overs & good music.

@RevanOfKrypton - It's the last season? I understand it really ought to be more dramatic, but I think it's been ~2+ years from watching the last season for me (at least feels like that). Even though I just about remember, what happens & who everyone is - I'm personally struggling with connecting (emotionally) to the characters. I should of rewatched.

I still recommend people watch it through. Feels a little like Star Wars meets rick & morty.

I hope they do an episode using Vormir, the soul stone and Red Skull.
