After nearly 30 years, Axel Foley is back in the first official trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, offering a first look at the upcoming fourth installment in Eddie Murphy's classic action-comedy franchise, and, based on the trailer alone, it looks like it's going to more than live up to the hype as our favorite detective gets back to action!
The film's synopsis reads, "Detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is back on the beat in Beverly Hills. After his daughter’s life is threatened, she (Taylour Paige) and Foley team up with a new partner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and old pals Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton) to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy."
Speaking to Tudum, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who was also behind fellow legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick, expressed his excitement, “Eddie's such an incredible artist. He can do drama, he can do comedy – he can do anything. And he’s the same Axel Foley. He’s still on the streets. He’s still doing what he does. Obviously, with age, you get wiser. But he still has the twinkle in his eye." Director Mark Mollloy added, “Some of the funniest moments in Axel F are when Eddie's improvising. For me, a big part of my job was to create the right environment, cast the right people around Eddie to allow him to do what he does best.”
In addition to Murphy, the cast features Judge Reinhold (Lt. Billy Rosewood), Paul Reiser (Det. Jeffrey Friedman), John Ashton (Sgt. John Taggart), Bronson Pinchot (Serge), Taylour Paige (Jane Foley), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Det. Bobby Abbott), Kevin Bacon (Captain Grant), Mark Pellegrino, and Patricia Belcher (Judge Angelic).
While Netflix hasn't set a release date, the streamer has confirmed a Summer 2024 release window. Whether or not the film could receive a limited theatrical release, however, remains to be seen.
