The new season will see Vanessa (Eva Green) and Ethan (Josh Hartnett) forming a deeper bond as the group, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani), unite to banish the evil forces that threaten to destroy them. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), the Creature (Rory Kinnear) and Brona (Billie Piper) are all waging battles of their own. Patti LuPone will be as a mysterious character of great importance in Vanessa’s past. Helen McCrory returns as Evelyn Poole (a.k.a. Madame Kali), the seductive spiritualist who will pose a unique threat to our heroes this season, along with Simon Russell Beale, who is back as eccentric Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle. Additional guest stars include Douglas Hodge as a Scotland Yard investigator, Sarah Greene as Poole’s powerful daughter, Hecate, and Johnny Beauchamp as a man with a singular past.

Showtime’s Penny Dreadful returns for its season two première on Sunday, April 26 at 10pm ET/PT. Series creator John Logan teases what's to come: “This season Vanessa and Ethan face new challenges and old enemies, and turn to each other for solace. Their intimacy grows as they are forced to confront their demons together.” We'll also have a new main villain, though we've met her before -- Madame Kali, the spiritualist and medium who hosted the Seance in the second episode of the first season. Says Showtime president David Nevins of the character: "There’s a great antagonist next year played by Helen McCrory… Season 1’s antagonist was sort of an inhuman character. It’ll be good to have a more human antagonist.”

I watched the first season on the recommendation of someone from CBM. Big mistake. There's not a single likeable character in the entire show.

These (and the Avenger's and other's) "character-promo-posters" are boring and useless.

Opinion.

But that first poster up there . . . is absolutely breathtaking.

Great graphic design.

It's better than any of those comic book shows because..well, not meaning to run them down but this is for grown ups! And I don't just mean because it's full of sex and violence etc, it's just a more thoughtful, engrossing, layered story.

I dislike the sexual scenes but other than that great tv show.

It certainly has potential. There were some great scenes like the seance and posessions, and Eva Green definitely steals the show for me. The overall plot was a bit of a mess though. Hopefully this season will be a bit more consistent in terms of writing.
