The second of several planned live-action Star Wars series for the new Disney+ streaming service has been officially announced, and this one will focus on the early life of Rogue One's Rebel spy, Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna).

This still untitled project will follow Jon Favreau's previously announced The Mandalorian, which recently commenced production.

The last time we saw Andor he was nobly giving his life for the Rebellion alongside Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) at the end of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, so this new show will obviously be a prequel.

Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced today that Lucasfilm is in development on a second Star Wars live-action series for Disney+, the Company’s new direct-to-consumer streaming service. The series, which will go into production next year, follows the adventures of rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Diego Luna will reprise the role of Andor.

“Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me,” said Luna. “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”

The rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire.

@NightwingNad - To be honest, I think the prequel era is better than the OT era. The prequel era spans 25 years. The OT only spans a few. The story possibilities with prequels are much better. You have Clone Wars and the Dark Times after Order 66. So many great stories you could tell there.

@Nightwing1015 - I could be wrong, but I believe the Old Republic is off limits because that's what the Game of Thrones guys are making. This is just my theory.

Being a prequel series doesn't necessarily mean it'll suck. I think it's an excellent idea, personally. So much they could explore in that particular era plus Andor and his droid make for an interesting onscreen dynamic.

Or at least, we won't see anything from that era until AFTER the Benioff and Weiss series (of films) starts.

That's exactly why.

Having a morally questionable and even murderous Rebel spy is something Star Wars has NEVER explored before in film. That's very ripe territory for a live action series and for a diverse set of live-action shows that helps keep the tones different. He isn't a lovable smuggler like Han he's a guy who kills informants just so they don't get caught and has a psychopathic droid sidekick.

I think you'd have to be short-sighted to not see the potential in this. That or just hate Star Wars in general.
