There had been rumblings about a big flashback scene in Obi-Wan Kenobi, and while we didn't get to see a live-action take on that badass armour from The Clone Wars, we did indeed revisit the prequels in yesterday's penultimate chapter.

In a scene that appears to take place shortly before (or potentially soon after) the events of Attack of the Clones, a Padawan Anakin Skywalker duels with his Master. His arrogance is palpable as he manages to overpower and outmanoeuvre Obi-Wan with his undeniably impressive lightsaber skills. However, Anakin misses the point of this lesson and is fixated on getting Kenobi to admit defeat.

"Your need for victory, Anakin, it blinds you," Obi-Wan tells him shortly after being disarmed. Turning the tables, the Jedi Master takes Anakin's blade from him and explains that his need to prove himself is his undoing. This plays heavily into the theme of today's episode as Darth Vader's overwhelming desire for victory blinds him to Kenobi's plan.

Something tells us this could factor into their final duel as well. That still appears to be on the cards, and Obi-Wan telling Anakin in the past that he will remain a Padawan until realising that proving himself is where he goes wrong might explain why Vader feels he is no longer the student when they meet again in A New Hope.

Clearly, Obi-Wan has one more lesson for his former friend before they part ways again.

Elsewhere in the episode, Tala Durith made the ultimate sacrifice to buy Ben and the rest of those Rebels time when she was gunned down by Vader's stormtroopers. With a fallen NED-B nearby, she sets off a grenade and gives the heroes an opportunity to make their escape. It's a shame to say goodbye to the character, but this marks yet another tragedy in Obi-Wan's life.

Take a closer look at that flashback below (the de-ageing VFX is...okay!).

Now this was a good episode.

I can now forgive some of the shortcomings from parts 2 to 4 as it did build to this point.

Really happy with those flashbacks, though I think they could have been de-aged a bit better, but that is a slight nit-pick.

I know there’s been some criticism about the writing and there were still some beats that felt off, but man, that line from the REAL Grand Inquisitor:

“Revenge does wonders for the will to live, don’t you think?”

The weight that held for himself, Reva and especially Vader was amazing.

8/10 for me.

Mostly fantastic. All episodes should have been though.

This episode proved to me that the entire show is wasted potential. Reva is such wasted potential and she should have been the main character. Take Leia, Obi-Wan and Luke out of it. We know they're going to be fine. The suspense doesn't matter.

Reva's backstory is that she's a former Jedi youngling that survived Order 66, and makes it her life's mission to kill Vader by rising up Sith and Empire ranks, hunting and killing her fellow Jedi. That's a fantastic premise for a show already.

Make this an entire show about the Inquisitors. Show how they're manipulated, abused and tortured by Vader, yet fight each other for his approval. Show Reva's internal conflict of wanting to avenge her friends yet being consumed by the dark side.

Star Wars needs to evolve. In style, in tone. In a lot of things. But it also needs to stop relying so much on nostalgia and telling stories with the same characters over and over again.

I'm really disappointed in this show as it is. I don't see it ending well.

@Kumkani - you’re preaching too much

The Reva storyline is such a great idea on its own. How did they not create a show for the character alone around it?

@Kumkani - 1000x yes, I wish more people with decision power had a similar opinion at Lucasfilm.

Ewan looks like he can still pull off prequel era Obi-Wan

Hayden looks like he has aged 17 years

I know Lucasfilm isn't Marvel, but I'd love to see a live action 'What If' with these actors switching roles, just so we can see more of this adult Anakin.

@UnderBelly - that would be cool

There are actually a few comics

What if Luke didn't destroy the death star

What if Luke died on Hoth

What if Leia’s negotiations with Jabba had gone differently

Think those are the only ones

Would be great to see how things would be if Qui Gon survived and trained Anakin himself

@dracula - oh for real? That's cool. I think exploring it would be interesting, and could give opportunity to bring all the expanded stuff to put on show.

It seems like they are forbidden to use anything from the expanded universe in the main plot.

I mean, i would have loved a TCW based flashback, but no, they gave us a lazy ass training scene on a coruscant balcony with nothing but a generic Volume scene in the background.

We could have another Episode III opening scene but no. Sometimes it seems like they are afraid of showing to casual people all the stuff SW has created in those years. But then on Disney+ they advise you to watch specific episodes from TCW. Ok, i guess.

Hayden definitely needed deaging. Ewan looked pretty good. Not to say that Hayden aged badly, he looks great for his age, but it's more noticeable to see a 40 year old man playing a 20 year old than a 50 year old man playing a 30 year old. Plus Ewan had the added benefit of having a beard to cover up half his face lol.

Still a very nice scene though. One of the few good things this show has had to offer.
