Obi-Wan Kenobi has been a huge hit with Star Wars fans, and after those first two episodes broke viewership records on the streaming service, it's really no great surprise that we've heard rumours of a season 2. There's certainly room to tell more stories during that gap between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and Ewan McGregor sounds keen to play Ben again.
Talking to IndieWire (via SFFGazette.com), Head Writer Joby Harold was asked for the first time about those rumours. "I can’t really speak to that, so unfortunately I won’t beyond saying it’s been a real thrill to work with this character, this universe, for this experience," he said, expertly dodging the question. "It has been opportunity of a lifetime, and I’ve cherished it."
The site also put it to him that the series has played a little fast and loose with canon at times (likely referring to The Grand Inquisitor's fate), and Harold was quick to ask fans to be patient. "There is a plan for all of that," he confirmed. "It’s such a big creative team making these shows that everyone’s very, very aware of canon and the fan base and the importance of making sure everything lines up, so it’s definitely something that was on the front of our minds always."
As for whether Harold can tease anything about the final two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi, he cleverly responded, "I think you can expect the fifth one to be called 'Episode 5' and the sixth one to be 'Episode 6.' Those are the two things I think I can say."
This feels like one of those interviews where what the writer isn't saying is actually more revealing than anything he does share. The fact that he wouldn't even speculate about an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 makes us think something might already be in the works, and an announcement following the June 22 finale wouldn't shock us.
Alternatively, Lucasfilm could save that for this September's Disney+ Day celebrations. We'll see.
