OBI-WAN KENOBI Showrunner Plays Coy When Asked About Those Recent Season 2 Rumors

Recently, there have been rumblings Lucasfilm might already be developing a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but what does showrunner Joby Harold have to say about that? Find his comments after the jump!

Obi-Wan Kenobi has been a huge hit with Star Wars fans, and after those first two episodes broke viewership records on the streaming service, it's really no great surprise that we've heard rumours of a season 2. There's certainly room to tell more stories during that gap between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and Ewan McGregor sounds keen to play Ben again.

Talking to IndieWire (via SFFGazette.com), Head Writer Joby Harold was asked for the first time about those rumours. "I can’t really speak to that, so unfortunately I won’t beyond saying it’s been a real thrill to work with this character, this universe, for this experience," he said, expertly dodging the question. "It has been opportunity of a lifetime, and I’ve cherished it."

The site also put it to him that the series has played a little fast and loose with canon at times (likely referring to The Grand Inquisitor's fate), and Harold was quick to ask fans to be patient. "There is a plan for all of that," he confirmed. "It’s such a big creative team making these shows that everyone’s very, very aware of canon and the fan base and the importance of making sure everything lines up, so it’s definitely something that was on the front of our minds always."

As for whether Harold can tease anything about the final two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi, he cleverly responded, "I think you can expect the fifth one to be called 'Episode 5' and the sixth one to be 'Episode 6.' Those are the two things I think I can say."

This feels like one of those interviews where what the writer isn't saying is actually more revealing than anything he does share. The fact that he wouldn't even speculate about an Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 makes us think something might already be in the works, and an announcement following the June 22 finale wouldn't shock us.

Alternatively, Lucasfilm could save that for this September's Disney+ Day celebrations. We'll see.

Some people seem to dislike this show, personally for me it’s been exactly what I wanted and I hope they stick the landing in the last two episodes. With that said for it to work they have to be the last 2. No second season, no loose threads left open for other shows to work with. Self contained story

@bobevanz - Worked for Mandalorian...why not? Can't wait for the next Star Wars show to make a baby Han Solo that needs to be protected by some lesser known character.

Overall, so far, I've been disappointed. Maybe because I was so, soooo excited for this it could never live up to expectations but some of it has been such a let down and bits of it have been plain stupid. Hoping the last few redeems it but to be honest I've lost faith, which is disturbing.

Heard this show is garbage and effectively Last Jedi's Obi-Wan, similar to Jake Skywalker. Not too surprising that Disney doubled down on repeating its mistakes.

Oh I'm sure there will be one, because they haven't spent any time on Anakin/Vader or Ben, or even Luke. Say it with me: CASHGRAB

I hope episode 6 is at least 1-hour long because there are so many things left and major plot holes into the Star Wars franchise to be adressed. I want to know why Vader says he was the learner and how Obi-Wan reach out to Qui-Gon through the Force. Give me Duel of the Fate and prequels flashbacks. Give me Obi-Wan trying to turn Vader back to the light but failing again. That's what the show should have been about.

I’m guessing they will move forward with a new showrunner if there is a S2.

@regularmovieguy - it's a little shocking. That's not to say you can't [frick] up or have a misfire in your career but her very recent output before the show was so good.

@GhostDog

Yeah…idk. I’ve never been the biggest Star Wars guy but I was really hyped for this show. Felt like it was too big to fail. Especially after all these years in development.
