THE MANDALORIAN Chapter 21 'The Pirate' Review; "[It] Features Everything Fans Love About STAR WARS"

The Mandalorian's latest episode is now streaming on Disney+, and with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey at the helm, "The Pirate" proves itself something special for Star Wars fans.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you do Star Wars. Today’s episode of The Mandalorian, titled "The Pirate," initially appears to be another (unwelcome?) diversion for the Disney+ series, taking the spotlight off Din Djarin and Grogu to again focus on the inner workings of the New Republic. At this stage, we have no choice but to assume Jon Favreau has started pulling ideas meant to expand this era in the scrapped Rangers of the New Republic spin-off into The Mandalorian. Once again, though, that proves to be far from a bad thing and is, in fact, nothing short of gripping.

After learning more about this government’s shortcomings, we catch up with Pirate King Gorian Shard who has arrived on Nevarro and is looking to take revenge on Greef Karga for his actions in the season 3 premiere. Din Djarin is eventually pulled into the fight and what follows is an action-packed spectacle that delivers everything fans love about Star Wars

Along the way, there are plenty of exciting new developments, though now Din has been reunited with his fellow Mandalorians, he’s starting to feel a little like, well, just another Mandalorian. Bo-Katan Kryze is outshining him at this point and the character could do with a new mission that gives him greater impetus as we head deeper into the second half of the season. However, at the same time, we can’t really find fault with a Din we’re going to call "Mando-dad" as he focuses on training Grogu and finding a new home for his people.

Pedro Pascal, Brendan Wayne, and Lateef Crowder continue to knock it out of the park as the three actors who bring Din to life, but Katee Sackhoff is establishing herself as one of this Galaxy’s biggest stars. The actress, who has gained a passionate fanbase with her genre work, seems close to breaking into Hollywood in an even bigger way. Surely, it won’t be long before she’s a regular fixture on the big screen as well as the small one if what we’re seeing in The Mandalorian is any indication.

Elsewhere, Carl Weathers, Emily Swallow, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, in particular, all impress and there’s another big surprise in this episode that will break the corner of the internet that’s home to fans of a certain animated series.

Alongside Sackhoff and Sun-Hyung Lee, director Peter Ramsey is The Mandalorian’s MVP this week. The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse director (who also helmed the massively underrated Rise of the Guardians) makes his Star Wars debut here and proves himself a dab hand at telling stories in this Galaxy. From the character work to the beautifully shot action scenes that put Mandalorians front and centre in a way we’ve only seen in animation before now, Ramsey is a force to be reckoned with behind the camera and we cannot wait to see what he does with Ahsoka later this year.

With standout performances from Katee Sackhoff and Sun-Hyung Lee, "The Pirate" features everything fans love about Star Wars and sees filmmaker Peter Ramsey prove himself one of this franchise’s greatest directors with a masterpiece-level episode.

If you didn't enjoy this episode, it might be time to move on from Star Wars.

Was it as emotional as Din taking his helmet off to wish Grogu goodbye? No. But it was fun as hell. A good old fashioned action episode with Star Wars toys. Very enjoyable.

Lmao, Josh with the hottest (worst) of hot takes. Truly some of the lousiest 40 mins in Star Wars iconography

@Cap1 - I honestly don't heed Josh's opinions very highly all the time, but I really did like this episode though.

SPOILERS from the episode: Couldn't tell what kind of foreshadowing they were trying to show at the end. Seems almost like they're hinting at the Armorer turning darkside and plotting shady stuff, Bo's look at Din at the end was maybe a sign that she's gonna go after the dark saber again. They showed it in the 'previously on' but it was nowhere to be seen in the actual episode. Maybe a Moses style 'led your people to the promiseland, but you don't get to come' kind of thing? Idk just feels like the direction of the show's a bit... murky.

@clornelas - I believe it is hinting that Bo's ex-crew may be hired by the Imperials now, possibly along with other Mandolorian outcasts. Bo will have to try to persuade them to go back to independence instead of following credits and taking the Imperial/Republic Scraps.

@clornelas -
Or that Gideon is setting them up. You knew it wasn’t just going to be a live happily ever after ending.

@CaptainScotland - The big purple alien that Captain Teva was talking with in the rebel base bar. Zeb's from the animated Star Wars Rebels. They even used the same voice actor.

I just wish the aerial and combat tactics weren't so basic. They can do better than "I'll be a decoy" and "go get em" and "cover me".

I just finished that episode. I was questioning where Favreau was going just yesterday with one of my staff members.
This brought it together.

I need not question Favreau. His successes, when left to his own devices and without interference from Kennedy, FAR exceed his failures.

And if the rumors are true and Kennedy is actually stepping down at the next D23, then that opens the door to bring back Cara Dune (Carano) and make the Rangers of the New Republic.

I also hope we are getting the Mandlorian Wars at some point.

Great episode.

@TyrantBossMedia - And if Kennedy had any input you change your opinion, right? Lol.

@rkshuttleworth - She didn't have any input because the episode was good.

When she adds input she ruins shows.

The one part of the season that I completely dislike is the fact that baby Yoda is back. He shouldn't even be there. It nullified that amazingly emotional ending of season 2.
And the reason he is there is Kennedy.

I don't get the negativity this season is getting, I've loved every episode except for the one that focused on Pershing. Its pretty clear to me that this season is building to a confrontation between Din and Bo Katan and that's what they've been laying the groundwork for with so much of the focus on her. That being said, it was really cool to see all the Mandalorians in action this episode fighting the pirates. Hopefully we'll get to see Gideon and more Imperials next episode.

@ComicFan523 - It's just stupid spoiled fanboys finding something else to bitch about. They all (every fandom's fanboys) need to be put in a rocket and flown into the sun. (Yes I said it and I meant it.)

It was a good episode I liked it, but I dont know if it’s the lighting or the muppet characters but it just feels overly Disney.

@Matchesz - yeah all the people, clothes and sets on navarro need more distressing, and the oranges and reds all over are pushed way too high in saturation.
