The fourth episode of Bates Motel has a TON of plot developments, so let's get this review going. The police know that about the man that Norma killed, the cop and Norma are getting closer, and Norman and the girl Bradley have a very, um, "budding" relationship. In case my sarcasm didn't come through in the writing, Norman now has a physical relationship. Norman's brother now knows about the man that Norma killed.
Now, there wasn't as much character development, this episode was more story driven, but you can tell Norma is going crazy. There are two instances were this really shows. The first is where she and Norman attempt to find the carpet that they took out of the room in the first episode. When they get there and the gate is locked and Norma realizes that she can't get to it, she goes insane. She jumps on the fence and starts screaming like a maniac, and even Norman is shocked. The second happens when she is talking to Norman's brother at the end of the episode. He tells her that Norman went over to Bradley's house to "console" her, Norma begins attacking him and screaming.
Any parent would be pissed to find out that their 17 year old isn't a virgin anymore, but she went INSANE. This shows just how attached she is to Norman and how she doesn't want anyone but her to have his attention. With each episode, both Norma and Norman both descend farther into madness.
And now for the plot development. The most important point is that the police know what Norma did, and they arrest her at the end. Now, this is interesting. I'm assuming she's going to get away with it, but that would make it difficult for any more psycho antics. What I'm saying is, the police would be keeping such a close eye on her that there is no way her or Norman could ever kill another person, so I'm wondering how the rest of the series will go.
Now for the next big plot point. Norman and Bradley are now physically involved with each other. Now, in the original film, it seems pretty obvious that Norman is virgin. So what I'm thinking is, as Norman becomes more murderous, will he kill Bradley, or will Norma kill her because she took Norman away from her?
And finally, about the girl Norman found in the basement. He runs out of the house, and she grabs his ankle, leaving a bruise. The bruise is obviously real, but Norma goes down there later, and finds nothing. So that leaves two options: Norman bruised himself because he was hallucinating, or the cop moved the girl because he knows that Norman saw the her. Both seems plausible, I'm not sure which it is. Well, I guess I'll just have to wait until Monday to find out.
So all in all, a great episode with some cool character development and a lot of plot development. I know I'm looking forward to episode 5.
