Venom: Let There Be Carnage is set to be released in theaters next month, and as the title suggests, Eddie Brock will be pitted against the psychotic Cletus Kasady. That clash is something comic book fans have been dreaming of seeing on the big screen for a long time, but a rematch for Spider-Man and Venom (especially after 2007's disappointing Spider-Man 3) is also a must.
The likelihood of that happening remains unclear given the separation between the MCU and SPUMC, but it does sound a lot like we'll start seeing a Spider-Man make his presence felt in the latter soon.
While we wait and see what happens on that front, Tom Hardy recently caught up with Esquire for a profile that saw him discuss his role as Venom. Asked what comes next for the franchise, he made it clear that a third movie is something that's already been discussed by Sony Pictures.
"I’m thinking about the third movie as well, because I think you need to write that at the same time," he said. When the site pushed for details on whether he and Kelly Marcel will re-team to write the story, the actor added: "A third won’t be greenlit until the second is successful, but the studio were really, really pleased with number two."
Inevitably, talk then turned to a possible big screen meeting between Spider-Man and Venom. "I would be remiss if I wasn’t trying to steer any kind of connectivity," Hardy teased. "I wouldn’t be doing the job if I wasn’t awake and open to any opportunity or eventuality or be excited by that. Obviously, that’s a large canyon to leap, to be bridged by one person alone, and it would take a much higher level of diplomacy and intelligence, sitting down and talking, to take on an arena such as that."
"Should both sides be willing, and it be beneficial to both sides, I don’t see why it couldn’t be. I hope and strongly, with both hands, push, eagerly, towards that potential, and would do anything to make that happen, within what’s right in business. But it would be foolish not to head towards the Olympic Games if you were running 100 metres, so yeah! I want to play on that field."
It sure feels like this is something that's been discussed, eh?
Even fans who didn't love 2018's Venom want to see this crossover become a reality, and third movie featuring Eddie, Carnage, and Spider-Man has the makings of a dream come true.
