While the majority of critics and comic book fans haven't responded particularly well to Venom, it appears as if moviegoers are just glad to have a Marvel movie to watch in an otherwise quiet October because the movie could end up earning as much as $80 million at the North American box office.
Despite a lowly 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Venom has received a B+ CinemaScore which put it with some interesting company. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Justice League, Spider-Man 3, and Suicide Squad all received the same verdict when they were released. That's not the best company but those movies all have their fans and Venom has managed to beat Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's B.
PostTrak, meanwhile, is still four stars but 80% overall positive. Is Venom going to be hated by critics and fans but embraced by moviegoers? Quite possibly and should it succeed, that's obviously going to make Sony Pictures feel extremely confident when it comes to the future of not just this franchise but the entire live-action Spider-Verse. On the plus side, a sequel could be beneficial in a lot of ways.
After all, Sony would no doubt address the many complaints made by critics and the door would probably be open to Carnage showing up which is something the first instalment should have done.
