Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ends with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles teaming up to defeat Robotnik, but the fun doesn't stop once the credits start rolling. The movie features one stinger that comes right after the initial batch of animated credits, and it's a doozy!
As the members of GUN (Guardian Units of Nations) clean up the aftermath of the battle, one of the soldiers mentions that when they wiped Robotnik from their databases, they unearthed a file from over 50 years ago titled 'Project Shadow." While the villain has vanished from the wreckage of his giant robot, his lackey Agent Stone is listening in with great interest, and we're then taken to a lab with a test tube containing an appropriately shadowy figure.
It rises from the ground and, yes, that is indeed Shadow the Hedgehog inside! His eyes open as the screen fades to black, and with that, the stage is set for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
In the games, Robotnik's grandfather created Shadow, but the hedgehog was put into suspended animation following his demise. Years later, the villain we know as "Eggman" picked up where his grandfather left off, convincing Shadow to help him in his quest for world domination. That sounds a little close to the plot of this sequel, so we're guessing the story will make a few key changes to that dynamic.
Perhaps it will be Stone's time to shine?
Either way, Shadow is a badass character, so there's bound to be a lot of excitement about where this story goes next. A Knuckles spinoff is in the works, of course, while a third movie has already been confirmed.
