The recent Street Fighter reboot was a pretty light-hearted affair for the most part, but one moment did stand out as being surprisingly brutal - and it's now come to light that the scene was originally going to be even more violent.

In an effort to prove her loyalty to the megalomaniacal M. Bison (David Dastmalchian), Chun-Li allows the palm of her hand to be branded with the logo of his Shadaloo criminal organization.

Now, actress Calliana Liang has revealed that her character was going to go much further to get close to the man who killed her father in a scene that ultimately proved too dark and gruesome for Capcom.

"Chun-Li was originally supposed to chop off a finger, but Capcom … They went back and forth with the script, and eventually they decided that hand-branding was the better way to do it," Liang tells THR. "If she had no pinky for the rest of the [potential series], it would be deforming the character in a way."

"I remember testing that scene during the camera test," Liang added. "I tried it, and I thought, It’s a lot. She’s about to physically hurt herself. But Kitao kept going, 'More, more, more. I want to see it in her eyes. She’s almost shaking.' And I was like, 'Alright, say less.'”

Unfortunately, Chun-Li never gets the chance to avenge her father's murder, as the movie ends somewhat abruptly with Bison escaping while the heroes mount a pursuit.

Liang was asked if she was disappointed with how her character's arc played out.

"Honestly, a little bit. The whole film, especially Chun-Li’s storyline, builds toward Chun-Li’s final takedown of Bison. But there’s a reason for everything, and hopefully, if we get a sequel one day, we’ll get to explore that. I’m sure it’d be epic."

Will we ever see that sequel? Street Fighter was panned by critics and, more importantly, hasn't been performing very well at the box office. There's always a chance that the studios will get the opportunity to make another movie if VOD and Blu-ray sales are through the roof, but right now, it's not looking likely.

Have you been to see Street Fighter? If so, let us know what you made of the movie in the comments.

“Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!”

The movie stars Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Orville Peck as Vega, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i as Akuma, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Eric André as Don Sauvage, Mel Jarnson as Cammy, Rayna Vallandingham as Juli, and Alexander Volkanovski as Joe.

This dog shit was already tonally all over the [frick]ing map, but THAT would have just been way too much. This is a [frick]ing videogame from the 90s made for little kids to drain their quarters on. We didn't mind seeing skeletons being ripped out and decapitated monsters and tons of gorey stuff in Mortal Kombat, but that's THAT game. Street Fighter had a COMPLETELY different tone. All the fighting games did.

Street Fighter was the gold standard game with serious stories involving characters in a fighting tournament for various reasons, basically no jokes. Mortal Kombat was the violent and gorey one. Tekken had the best graphics and innovated 3D controls. Dead Or Alive was the one with very generous jiggle physics.

Sorry... I just smoked a J and totally forgot why I started talking about all that...

if they just cut the overly comedic crap and had a better actor (more intimidating, masculine looking) for M.Bison this movie could’ve been good.
I enjoyed the Ryu, Ken and Akuma stuff but they ruin what could’ve been a decent movie with dumb stuff from Eric Andre, Shultz and Pokadot M.Bison.
The tournament should’ve been the focus but they skipped over what should’ve been good fight scenes.

If they get a sequel then they should steer away from Dumb and Dumber type comedy and go Big Trouble in Little China quality.

The opening anime promised something a lot more epic than what we ultimately got. & too much faith was put into the Bison actor

This movie feels like a janitor knocked over a physical Pinterest board and tried to pick it up and organize it.

There's a good movie in there somewhere. But the studio didn't know if they were adapting the video games, the anime film or the Van Damme movie instead of letting it be it's own thing. The cast was fine. This one failed at the scripting phase.

I saw it yesterday, I enjoyed it. It's not amazing but it was fun- enjoyed the callbacks to the animated movie (shower scene) and the original movie (Tuesday). I found Eric André being forced to broadcast by armed soldiers hilarious, but the skipping fight scenes was a bit disappointing (although I appreciate they had like a seven way bar brawl showing off those fighters so they got their due I guess). I think it was a ballsy move to set up a sequel which probably won't happen. They were trying to throw in far too much and didn't finish their story unfortunately. Better than MK2, but that's not saying much. To be fair, I only ever played SF2 so I'm not exactly a hardcore fan or anything. I've played every MK and found that movie offensive 🤣 so maybe real SF fans would feel the same way here.

Saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it, but I do agree with some of the points above. My main gripes are:
1. Wrong actor for Bison
2. How do you NOT show the Guile vs Vega fight
3. Guile hair was overdone
4. Commie outfit choice...gimme the one piece & beret!
I really hope it gets a sequel though.

Yeah that definitely was too much and glad Capcom reigned in, the branding scene was enough to make the audience feel for Chun-Li there.

I think the real focus of the story was repairing the severed bond between Ryu and Ken, with the tournament and Bison's schemes put right in the middle as more of a subplot than the real fun flare meat of the narrative so that must be why not everything landed as it should in the fighting themed area.

But I didn't think it ended that abruptly, once Akuma showed up to challenge the champion and seek out again the Dark Hadou in Ryu that's when you could tell the 3rd act of the movie was on. And it's a bold, new direction to make one of the bad guys, Bison here, get away with everything ("you lose" was a nice way to wrap it up in his favor) which make perfect sense to do a follow-up with stronger and more mature heroes.

Hopefully a sequel of sorts can form because I do like the cast, but a better script must be presented though.
