MORTAL KOMBAT Sequels And Spinoffs Reportedly In The Works At Warner Bros.

The recent Mortal Kombat reboot performed reasonably well for Warner Bros. (it's still one of the most viewed movies on HBO Max), and a new report indicates that sequels and spinoffs are in the works.

The Mortal Kombat reboot had a decent enough run at the box office all things considered, but the R-rated movie performed a lot better on HBO Max, and is still one of the most viewed films on the streaming service. Now, we're hearing that a sequel - and possibly several other spinoffs - are in the works.

We don't have a whole lot to go on, but in Variety's report on Dune being released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously and the chances of a sequel being greenlit, the trade mentions that "Warner Bros. looking to develop other installments in its Mortal Kombat universe." Based on this, we can probably assume that nothing is officially in development yet, but it certainly sounds like we can count on a direct sequel at the very least.

Mortal Kombat left itself open to a follow-up by setting up the debut of klassic kombatant Johnny Cage, with Cole Young (Lewis Tan) setting off to Hollywood to enlist the cocky movie star for "Team Raiden" in the battle to come.

One of the biggest criticisms aimed at the first film was that it didn't actually feature a tournament, but we expect that to be rectified in the sequel. Though nothing has been confirmed, other fan-favorite characters who could potentially appear include Baraka, Kitana, Sindel and Shao Khan. Plus, although Sub-Zero was killed off at the end of the movie, Joe Taslim has hinted at his possible return as Noob Saibot.

What do you guys make of this news? What would you like to see from a Mortal Kombat sequel? Let us know in the usual place.
