Flawless victory!
We knew last week's Mortal Kombat trailer was very well-received by fans of the long-running video game series, but it's probably safe to say nobody expected this.
Deadline reports that the blood-soaked teaser scored 116M views within its first week, serving up fatalities to the likes of Logan and Deadpool 2 to become the biggest red band trailer of all time. The action-packed first look at the movie reportedly trended in 52 total markets on YouTube and 28 total markets on Twitter, registering a 98% Positive-to-Neutral social sentiment rating.
This would suggest that WB and New Line have a big hit on their hands, but as we know all too well, there have been many great trailers for many bad movies over the years, so we'll just have to wait and see if the movie lives up to the hype.
The official Mortal Kombat Twitter account acknowledged the achievement and thanked the fans by sharing this reaction video.
In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?
Mortal Kombat is set for a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max this April 12.
