Today marks the 85th anniversary of Wonder Woman's first cimic book appearance, and fans were hoping that we might get an update on the iconic character's highly anticipated DCU debut.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn did take to social media to mark Wonder Woman Day, but aside from a "Gods and Monsters" (which may not mean very much) mention, he made no reference to the Amazonian warrior's live-action or animated status.
However, DC Comics did announce that 2027 will be the "Year of Wonder," with Louise Simonson and Stephanie Williams taking over Diana's adventures on the page.
"On the anniversary of Diana’s 1941 debut in All-Star Comics #8, DC has officially declared 2027 the Year of Wonder, a celebration of the Amazon Princess featuring new stories from acclaimed creators. Writer Louise Simonson will lead the festivities, writing DC’s main Wonder Woman series for the first time, beginning with Wonder Woman #41 on January 20, 2027. Simonson will team with artist Cian Tormey for a four-issue story that promises major changes for Diana and the Amazons. Following that arc, writer Stephanie Williams and artist Elena Casagrande will take over for six issues, carrying the celebration through October 2027.
DC also promises more Wonder Woman announcements throughout the year."
Last year, we got word that a new Wonder Woman movie is moving forward at DC Studios, with Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira enlisted to pen the script. There is speculation that the hero will make her DCU debut in Man of Tomorrow, and a lot of fans are convinced that Adria Arjona has been cast as Diana, not the villainous Maxima.
A recent rumor claimed that this project had been placed on the back burner at DC Studios following the failure of Supergirl, but that remains to be seen.
During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn responded to a report that Wonder Woman is being "fast-tracked," and while he somewhat downplayed the notion that the project is anywhere close to entering production, he did confirm that the movie is a priority for DC Studios.
"I don’t know what they mean by fast-tracking. [Laughs.] I’ve always had Wonder Woman as a priority. But we got the first few things started, and there’s some other things that are really close to green-lighting — like there’s a television show that I hope that we’re gonna be green-lighting in the next few days. So now a little time has passed, and we really need Wonder Woman and we really need Batman, because they’re so important to us. And so it’s become a little bit more like going to everybody at DC and being like, we need to figure this out. We have good writers on Wonder Woman and we just have to make sure it’s working and they have to not be somebody who’s gonna take two years to write a script."
