@KennKathleen - I think two of DC's biggest problems have actually been A; hiring the wrong people to oversee a shared, varied continuity, and B; trying to replicate the MCU model when they absolutely don't need to.

Snyder and Gunn are both very distinctive filmmakers, and that's not necessarily a criticism. The problem is that neither is particularly versatile when it comes to tone or style. They both have such strong, recognisable creative fingerprints that asking either of them to oversee a universe containing Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman, The Question, etc. inevitably risks making the whole thing feel like it's being filtered through one person's sensibilities. DC needs someone who can oversee a universe without needing to put their own stamp on every corner of it.

And I completely agree that DC shouldn't be trying to "be Marvel". A shared continuity is great, and I'd absolutely want one if it's done properly, but it shouldn't be the only option. DC has one enormous advantage that Marvel doesn't have to the same degree: the concept of Elseworlds. You can have your interconnected DCU running alongside completely standalone films that don't have to set anything up, lead anywhere else, or even have a sequel.

Joker was a perfect example of that. It worked precisely because it didn't need to fit into anything. Clayface could have easily been another standalone Elseworlds film. And, while it's probably too late for this now, I'd have loved to see a Batman Beyond film with Michael Keaton, or even George Clooney, as an older Bruce Wayne. That could have been its own thing, with its own tone, its own story and absolutely no obligation to connect to the wider DCU.

That's where I think DC could really differentiate itself. Have the main shared continuity, absolutely. But alongside that, give experienced filmmakers the freedom to make singular, self-contained DC stories. Don't give every film a gigantic budget. Don't demand a sequel. Don't make everything a piece of a ten-year plan. Hire directors with clear individual visions and let them make great movies.

And then, every so often, you can do something like what Matt Reeves is doing with The Batman and allow a filmmaker to build a proper trilogy around their own interpretation of a character. IF thats what that filmmaker wants to do and has a vision for it.

You could have a shared universe, standalone Elseworlds, filmmaker-driven trilogies and occasional one-off experiments all existing alongside each other. That's infinitely more creatively exciting to me than trying to make every DC movie fit the same formula.

The irony is that DC doesn't need fewer creative voices. It needs more of them. The trick is giving those voices the freedom to be different rather than trying to make everything feel like it belongs to the same filmmaker or follows the same corporate blueprint.
