UPDATE: James Gunn Marks Wonder Woman Day With Tribute Post - But Are We Any Closer To DCU Diana Announcement?

Fans were hoping that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn might mark Wonder Woman Day by sharing an update on the DCU's Diana, but no such luck...

UPDATE: Though various social media fan sites might well be reading too much into this, Man of Tomorrow star Adria Arjona has liked Gunn's Wonder Woman post.

So did several other actors Gunn has worked with!

Original article follows.

Today marks the 85th anniversary of Wonder Woman's first comic book appearance, and fans were hoping that we might get an update on the iconic character's highly anticipated DCU debut.

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn did take to social media to mark Wonder Woman Day, but aside from a "Gods and Monsters" (which may not mean very much) mention, he made no reference to the Amazonian warrior's live-action or animated status.

However, DC Comics did announce that 2027 will be the "Year of Wonder," with Louise Simonson and Stephanie Williams taking over Diana's adventures on the page.

"On the anniversary of Diana’s 1941 debut in All-Star Comics #8, DC has officially declared 2027 the Year of Wonder, a celebration of the Amazon Princess featuring new stories from acclaimed creators. Writer Louise Simonson will lead the festivities, writing DC’s main Wonder Woman series for the first time, beginning with Wonder Woman #41 on January 20, 2027. Simonson will team with artist Cian Tormey for a four-issue story that promises major changes for Diana and the Amazons. Following that arc, writer Stephanie Williams and artist Elena Casagrande will take over for six issues, carrying the celebration through October 2027.

DC also promises more Wonder Woman announcements throughout the year."

Last year, we got word that a new Wonder Woman movie is moving forward at DC Studios, with Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira enlisted to pen the script. There is speculation that the hero will make her DCU debut in Man of Tomorrow, and a lot of fans are convinced that Adria Arjona has been cast as Diana, not the villainous Maxima.

A recent rumor claimed that this project had been placed on the back burner at DC Studios following the failure of Supergirl, but that remains to be seen.

During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn responded to a report that Wonder Woman is being "fast-tracked," and while he somewhat downplayed the notion that the project is anywhere close to entering production, he did confirm that the movie is a priority for DC Studios.

"I don’t know what they mean by fast-tracking. [Laughs.] I’ve always had Wonder Woman as a priority. But we got the first few things started, and there’s some other things that are really close to green-lighting — like there’s a television show that I hope that we’re gonna be green-lighting in the next few days. So now a little time has passed, and we really need Wonder Woman and we really need Batman, because they’re so important to us. And so it’s become a little bit more like going to everybody at DC and being like, we need to figure this out. We have good writers on Wonder Woman and we just have to make sure it’s working and they have to not be somebody who’s gonna take two years to write a script."

His hesitation is understandable. He's already told his wife that the role is hers, but isn't looking forward to the rest of us finding out.

Nice tribute post…

However I don’t see us getting any official update on the Wonder Woman film until the new year and if Adria Arjona is indeed playing the character in MOT , certainly not until after the film releases in July imo!!.

How is today the 85th anniversary, and yet the comics out today, barely have anything remarkable for Wonder Woman? There was a couple new printings for Absolute Wonder Woman and that's about it. Not even a facsimile of any key or first issues? Sorry I know, a lot of you don't actually read comics though.

Be patient Wonder Woman fans, Gunn has to produce Swamp Thing and more Creature Commandos (which every DC fan asked for) first 😂

The DCU truly sucks to be honest. I have no further interest in seeing the Trinity under James Gunn. James Gunn cannot juggle different character personalities in his movies. Everyone has to be a wacky slapstick goofball or they have to be a washed up has been. Looking at you Hal Jordan.

@FireGunn - Mr. Terrific was Nebula and every other character is Star Lord or Drax.

@SonOfAGif - Can't really agree with the Nebula comparison at all. But I agree about Star-Lord and Drax. The most Drax-esque character so far is Peacemaker himself while the way Corensweat's Superman carries himself does give Star-Lord energy sometimes.

If Adria is indeed Diana, what the Hell is all the secrecy for? There’s literally no point in keeping something secret we all already know. If anything, just making it official the role is hers and she’s debuting in Man of Tomorrow would help them. There’s no excitement or hype surrounding the DCU right now, hardly anyone cares. Announcing the new Wondy would at least be something. Wtf are these guys doing?

@TheExile117 - 100% I love Wonder Woman and I think Adria would be amazinf but Im sick of how theybare handling pretty much everything. Why cant they give us this one thing! Give us WW!!!

What has the [frick]ing world come to when Mr Terrific is the most interesting character in the [frick]ing DCU and there is ZERO BATMAN and even less WONDER WOMAN?

Ignoring the trolls, probably my biggest complaint about the DCU so far is not announcing a Wonder Woman DCU movie as part of the initial announcement but instead developing a prequel about Themyscira that would take place BEFORE WW’s birth.

If I had to take a guess it’s because they didn’t establish fully yet what parts of the DCEU would carryover into the DCU including Gal Gadot‘s Wonder Woman. But this is why I’ve said before that I would’ve preferred if they just did a total full on hard reboot, or at least explicitly only kept the Blue Beetle and Peacemaker right at the start instead of being vague on which actors may or may not reprise their roles.
