WONDER WOMAN 1984 Opens To $38.5 Million Overseas, But Disappoints In China During Its Opening Weekend

Wonder Woman 1984 doesn't hit HBO Max until Friday, but it's already playing in many theaters overseas where it opened to...well, the sort of numbers you would probably expect in the midst of a pandemic!

Deadline reports that after debuting in 32 international markets this weekend, Wonder Woman 1984 has so far managed to earn $38.5 million at the worldwide box office. That's quite a bit below the $60 million haul many insiders were expecting heading into the weekend, and can be blamed on a disappointing debut in China, where it earned just $18.8 million during its opening weekend.

Sudden closures in many European countries certainly didn't help matters, with many parts of the UK, for example, now in lockdown after the emergence of a new variation of COVID-19.

Wonder Woman 1984 grossed $5 million on IMAX screens, with $3.8 million of that coming from China. Countries like Thailand, Brazil, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, the UK, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam followed the Middle Kingdom, but it could have been worse: Monster Hunter made only $2.2 million in the U.S. this weekend, a sign that not even a blockbuster can attract an audience right now.

As for how the DC Comics sequel is expected to perform domestically over the upcoming Christmas weekend, Variety says Warner Bros. is reporting that they've done $4.3 million in advanced ticket sales, while insiders believe a $5 million - $7 million opening weekend is probably the best the studio can hope for. With so many theaters closed, and Wonder Woman 1984 also premiering on HBO Max, that's hardly a surprise.

In 2017, Wonder Woman opened to $103 million, so this just goes to show how much things have changed.

How will you be choosing to watch Wonder Woman 1984 this weekend?
