BOX OFFICE: THE WOLVERINE Claws Its Way To The Top Spot In China

Despite opening across the majority of the world way back in July, James Mangold's The Wolverine has finally been released in China, and a strong $18.7 million opening has led to it becoming the #1 movie there. Hit the jump for further details!

The Wolverine exceeded everyone's expectations when it was released this summer, including dubious fanboys and box office analysts. However, it's recent opening in China of $18.7 million has helped to push 20th Century Fox's global ticket sales past $2 billion this year. It's surprising that the movie - which was positively received by moviegoers and critics alike - did so well, especially as it's likely that pirated copies and illegal downloads have been readily available in China for months now. Hugh Jackman went to the country for the premiere, resulting in a lot of media coverage for the movie, so that may have been a big help ultimately. Regardless, there were 2.96 million admissions for the film in the first week, and this is great news for those hoping that Logan will return for another solo movie with director James Mangold at the helm.

I really enjoyed this movie. I'm really looking forward to how Days of futures past is going to resolve what transpired in the last act. In regards to his claws.

I doubt Lauren Donner is going to have an epiphany eventually if you keep screaming for the rights to go back to Marvel, and take your advice about giving up the X-Men rights Thanos :D

@Wolvie, wassup man. I know you're passionate about Fox and tbeir CBMs so I'lll say this as respectfully as I can.

I don't think ALL their CBMs are terrible and appreciate the fact that they are trying so hard to bring us, what they feel, are quality movies. But, in the back of my mind somewhere, when I look at the poorly executed continuity, the unnecessary character changes, the flawed screenplay, lack of recognizable costumes, weaker sfx, and, the failure to maximize on the earning potential despite having a very capable and talented cast, I can't help but wonder if another studio could do a better job. Right now, because of the undeniable overall SUCCESS of their movies, that studio is Marvel (and arguably WB with the right director at the helm, but I doubt this would happen anytime soon). So, now I get to imagine the perfect MCU with all my favorite characters interacting and it's the icing on the cake.

Now, if you disagree and you believe that nooone could do a better job, I respect that, but, is it possible for a man dream without being a fanboy?

Well said @Enphileuwince! This might be the first time I've heard someone express dislike for Fox on this site without going into a fanboy induced rage of "F%CK FOXXXXXXXXXXXX MARVEL STUDIOS IS WINNINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG" rant. So for that you have earned my respect.

I agree with some of your grievances, but like @Batmaniac mentioned, letting Marvel Studios have the rights would lead to a noticeable decrease in the rate of Marvel movies we see per year, and I really don't want that. I also think the success of Avengers and their cinematic universe had forced Fox executives to really MAKE A PLAN, and map what they are trying to accomplish, and how they are going to do it. So while I agree that Fox has some kinks to work out, I think they are well on their way to becoming an admirable comic book movie producing studio that can give us more incredible CBMs like X2 more consistently :)

@Batmaniac, you may very well be right, Sir. But, isn't it also possible that they might be willing to scrap some of their less promising future projects for fan favorites? We're hearing about movies 2 - 3 years down the pipeline; nothing is written in stone. Why can't they just change their plans/minds?

No prob! And I'm pretty excited to see DOFP in 2014! If everything works out, some continuity issue can be fixed, we'll get an enjoyable CBM, and the roots for an X Force film can be put in place! It should a good next two years for Marvel CBMs in general really. So many Marvel CBMs coming out. Makes the fanboy in me happy :)

I loved this Movie, it was the best CBM of the year to me, maybe Thor TDW will top it we shall see.

One Reason im hoping DC makes a very sucessful JL movie before Avengers 3 comes out is so it will raise the stakes and have Marvel-Sony-Fox work out a deal and have X-Men and Spidey in Avengers 3. I dont see them working together till DC over powers them with their roster. Superman VS Bstman may accomplish this if it is a huge success.
Enphlieuwince
Enphlieuwince - 10/22/2013, 6:09 AM
@Batmaniac, I see your point when you put out it that way. How do you think the Fox movies stack up to the other studios' if you had to put it in a particular order?
TheWolverine08
TheWolverine08 - 10/22/2013, 6:12 AM
In regards to how Fox stacks up to other Movie Studios, I think it looks like this for me

1. Marvel studios
2. Fox/Warner Brothers (Who takes the top spot here often fluctuates)
3. Sony.

I personally think Sony is the worst comic book movie studio right now. They've had some success with Spider-Man, but almost all of their other comic book movie adaptions (Ghost Rider, etc.) have been failures.

Enphlieuwince - 10/22/2013, 6:13 AM
@Wolvie, even with the success of this films, Hugh has been saying that he may not be doing many more movies as Wolverine. Despite the height issue (which it think it was dumb to make the character vertically challenged un the first place) I think he has been the perfect Wolverine and he will be hard to replace. If you had your say, who would you say should be Logan next?
TheWolverine08
TheWolverine08 - 10/22/2013, 6:20 AM
I love Hugh Jackman as Wolverine too @enphileuwince! If I had to pick anyone to replace him, I'd go with Scott Caan. He often plays brash, gruff people similar to Wolverine, and he'd satisfy the fanboys who scream for a short Wolverine (He's 5'5.)

@Batmaniac, very interesting picks indeed. Thanks for humoring me.

@Wolvie, a very good choice with Caan. I hadn't considered him and I'm a big fan of his dad's ever since I first saw him as Santino "Sonny" Corleone.

For me jt would be Justin Theroux. He's not as short as Caan at 5'9" but he is shorter than most male leads for CBMs. And the resemblance to Logan is uncanny (pun intended, lol) to say the least.

That costume is awesome @Batmaniac! Actually looks wearable. There was a teaser image of another costume in DOFP. Looks sort of brownish.
Enphlieuwince
Enphlieuwince - 10/22/2013, 7:07 AM
Yeah, I agree. I really hope Hugh gets to wear a classic version of the costume like that before he's done playing Logan. It would be an epic waste if they didn't...
TheWolverine08
TheWolverine08 - 10/22/2013, 7:11 AM
Wow, Theroux does look a lot like Wolverine. Never really noticed until now. But you got to watch height, any normal sized human who wants to play Wolverine will get foaming mouth fanboys. I'm personally cool with a regular sized Wolverine in a movie. Sh%t, the guy hasn't been drawn as 5'3 for years in comics.
