BOX OFFICE: THE WOLVERINE Finishes Weekend With $53M; Lowest X-MEN Movie Opening Ever

The Wolverine kicked off its North American box office run even softer than expected, meaning that it had not only had the lowest opening ever for an X-Men movie, but also that it's the least successful superhero movie this summer. Read on for details!

So, The Wolverine didn't quite perform as well as many were expecting or hoping (see the Tweets below), but is that really a surprise after 2009's awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine? However, don't write the movie off just yet! The Wolverine has already regained its production budget thanks to a strong opening overseas and should continue to perform well over the next few weeks thanks to strong word of mouth. Even at this early point, it seems highly unlikely that this is the last we've seen of Wolverine...especially as he'll return in next year's X-Men: Days of Future Past! Another solo movie is surely at least being discussed at Fox though. What do you guys think?

Josh Wilding Reviews: THE WOLVERINE; "An Edge Of Your Seat Adrenaline Ride"

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

is it 53 or 55 million? I don't care about money too much, but people kept telling me 55, which is equal to First Class.

It seems like X-Men Origins may have hurt this movie's box office, Even before watching the wolverine i had some doubts about it.

I usually hope every CBM does well but this movie was just plain felt like watching Elektra just with Wolverine. Give Marvel back the rights and put Wolvie where he belongs in the Xmen just dont make him the center of the universe.

"Lowest X-Men opening ever"

Ironically the best X-men ever. This movie owned. Seriously, this is the best CBM of the summer for me. With MOS at a close second.

Mangold should direct a Daredevil or Batman film.

Profit profit profit. We've all become Ferengi.

Wolverine doesn't need a sequel. It was a good standalone movie, but it managed to tie just about everything up at the end. Fox needs to branch out with the other X-Men characters. Perhaps Days of Future Past will open doors to alternate realities, even time-traveling.

I liked the Wolverine enough, especially with what I was expecting. And that fight with Shingen? F*cking awesome. Now let's see some other characters.

I don't know why movies like Pacific Rim & The Wolverine are underperforming. I go to my local AMC and those movies are packed with ticket goers.

Not a big opening domestic but a pretty damn amazing opening weekend worldwide. Baring in mind its only been open three days taking $139 million worldwide is pretty damn good. Japan don't get this film until September so it has plenty big box office yet to make.

His articles do get more clicks than and pages of bullshit flame wars!

@decimus83
He's the most committed actor in the X-Men movies, arguably more than anyone else whose worked in a CBM. Except maybe Adam West, MAYBE.

And it's not like he's holding on to the character, not like he can't do anything else. He's proven himself to be versatile. He has a future outside of Wolverine. The studio loves him, and he loves the character.

The man has a lot of energy - I challenge you to find someone else who would NOT ONLY do a better job than him, but stay committed.
Greengo

I like the movie & I am a Huge Hugh fan,

But it's time to hang up the claws.

I want to see a Wolverine that is short, stocky, hairy with a costume.

@KingTrav33

If people like you were in charge the Dark Knight trilogy never would have happened, what the [frick] is so bad about the crew behind a CBM trying to make something more than a generic blockbuster.

i really dont get how you guys can get past the final act of the movie so easy.. i mean i was absolutely dissapointed by the final fight and the claws incident.. .. i mean wolverine without it's adamantium claws is like spder-man without it's webb.. brilliant until the last part .. in my opinion
