Cyclops...a good X-Man?

I know a lot of people don't really like Cyclops but here are the reasons I think he's awesome...

There are alot of reasons why people don't like Cyclops. Just to name a couple, he's a teacher's pet and he's a whiner when it comes to women. But here are reasons he's quite the character. The majority are out of the Marvel Universe. For starters, Xavier enlisted him as the deputy leader of the X-men. He has disappeared a few times but has always remained that way. He is partially responsible for creating one of the most awesome characters around...Cable. Although he didn't really have a hand in raising him, its just in Cable's genes to be a great tactical leader thanks to dear old dad.

He fused with Apocalypse during "The Twelve" to save the X-Men and survived (down the road of course). I know alot of people die and come back but its still awesome. His dad is the Captain of the Starjammers. His brothers are Havok (who is cool too) and Gabriel. Even when powerless Cyclops managed to still lead the team and very well. He has a cool power that can punch through a mountain and if focused just right can put a hole through a nickel from a distance. And look at the women in his life. Yes he was with Jean Grey forever but in that timespan he even had Psylocke trying to seduce him. Plus he's now with Emma Frost. He put together a mutant island. And after currently reading Uncanny X-Men 517 (which inspired this), he really shines as team leader while fighting the Predator X.

Even Magneto followed his orders. That shows how much respect he deserves. Plus even without his powers he is a highly skilled fighter who can even keep up with Wolverine in a hand to hand fight. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Now saying all this, don't look at the movie version of him. They did him no justice.

i wasn't a fan at all of movie cyclops. if his character was true to form, the changes they made to the other characters wouldn't have seemed as drastic because his character/personality forms the backbone of the whole team. because of the way they portrayed him, the movie x-men seemed like just a bunch of people hanging out together as opposed to a trained tactical squad which they are under comic cyclops.

@ dellmorte...out of your list, I like Nightcrawler. My other 3 (other than Cyclops) is Iceman, Havok and Archangel. Never was much of a Gambit fan and he is overrated. And don't get me wrong, I do like Wolverine but he is not the X-Men.

@ greenlantern...I agree with you regarding the movie. They made Cyclops seem like a puss. It was just a bunch of people basically hanging out who happened to be there when Wolverine showed up. the Wolvering movie is basically just Wolverine 4.

I HATE what the movies did with the character but he's a brilliant comic book character!!!

What's wrong with gambit?

Cyclops is a cool X-man. He's a natural born leader, and yes, the x-men are incomplete without him. Women problems aside (really, he left his own wife and child?), cyclops is a good character.

I too hate how he was reduced to a side character in the films. Wolverine is NOT supposed to be the man in charge.

@ supermarioworldE...I used to like Gambit in the 90's (circa Jim Lee's X-men and prior), but He's just been used way too much and I am just getting sick of all the praise he receives. I also think in regards to the movies, they should pick a different actor to portray Iceman and make him a little less wussified.

they need to bring cyclops back in x-4 and do x-4 and x-5 back to back cyclops could have been a really great leader and strong character if the writers would add him into the story. i also think colossus, iceman, angel, nightcrawler, emmafrost, rogue, and gambit need to be the main focus of good guys in the film and bring in beak, husk, angel salvador tito bohusk, glob herman, and chamber as new characters and cameos. and for the main villains start with the sentinels, the have sinister, and apocalypse thats what i want to see and those characters are the most interesting and its about time to show some mutants that have to hide because they really look different plus they are emotional characters and really give good story.bring us this.

@ warmachine...I agree with all except for Jean Grey, Storm and Jubilee. Jean Grey is overdone for the movies and Storm is pretty much more part of Black Panther's life. I would suggest Psylocke in there too. If Jean was left in there. They should do The Phoenix Saga (the right way).

@ chris...Haven't heard any news on Spider-Man 4 lately. I have always liked Shocker or use Electro. He's making a comeback. But if they used Lizard, they should introduce Kraven and Calypso and use the McFarlane's story from the first issues of Spider-Man.

I know. He'd have to be part of a revised Sinister Six or a secondary villian.

Here's a rundown of revised Sinister Six:

Scorpion, Shocker, Electro, Mysterio, Vulture, and Rhino. I know there is two characters with the same powers but I like them both. The only thing missing is a good villianous leader.

grant morrison is awesome and anyone who says different well your wrong. he brought beak and the others in special class and had some great new stories. i began to collect x-men comics again because of that run. and i like generation-x as well chamber and husk were two really cool characters. i liked beaks grandson tito bohusk he was very interesting.i really liked glob herman, angel salvador, and prosimian but i think prosimian and orb weaver were in a different run in the x-men comics.i hope they use these characters in the future films. grant morrisons great sorry for the rant.

@GLS-2814

Well, wolverine was originally my favorite x-man, but they've used him so much that I've lost interest in him, so I understand your distaste for gambit. Iceman's character was completely wrong in the x-men films but then again, who hasn't been messed up in those damned x-men films?
TheDemonHunter
TheDemonHunter - 12/3/2009, 4:52 AM
@1chris2 -- Grant Morrison is typical of what pushed me away from comics. A refusal (or perhaps inability?) to adhere in any form to what came before his run just so he could tell his own stories, no matter what he has to change to do it.

Now before any of you start complaining that I don't know what I'm talking about, I have no problem with writers wanting to tell their own stories. But if you're going to change everything about the existing characters just to write that story, why don't bother using them to begin with? Make your own characters, and leave the stuff that already exists for someone who knows how to play well with others.

When you're working in the world of indie comics, you have free rein to write stories and characters any way that you want if you're the creator, but when you're working with established characters and settings in the big mainstream stuff, you should have to have a little more respect for the material than he has. Putting your own stamp on the material doesn't have to mean ignoring everything that came before your work because it doesn't fit "your vision."

i can agree some what on that thedemonhunter if he would have used just beak, globherman, angel salvador, xorn, and the other new x-men and maybe even chamber, and husk to build them a little bit more it would have been great for me anyways because it would have been stories about the new x-men mutants, but the other fans would have wanted wolverine and them in there or they would have been pissed.it would have left the original x-men alone and untouched so other fans would have been happy but not useing them would make other unhappy. so morrison did a great job.i would really like to see the characters i mentioned above plus tito bohusk, anole, prosimian, mamommax, and orb weaver make it into the future films. they are kinda odd looking but that would make them interseting the weird looking mutants are always my favorites plus the can really help the stories of mutants struggling to be excepted by humans and normal looking mutants.would be kinda cool to see them in the films.i think anole and glob herman had cameos in the wolverine film and x-3, well glob herman was only in x-3 but anole i think was in both.hope they put them in first class and the next few films or remake then put them in, really want to see beak, and chamber.

sometimes i think it would be better if x-men has a television series, that way more characters and story lines can be brought in, just an idea.

i was thinking of something like smallville, that type of television. however, i could see x4 being a continuation from x3 but also a revision of how the characters are portrayed and their comic book outfits to adjust their appearance, i think it would work.

i meant a one hour television series like smallville is but in no way related or done in the same way.

cyclops is my favorite comic character. and also, you said he didn't have a hand in raising cable, but thats not exactly true. cyclops and jean grey raised cable in the future. check out the now classic Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix miniseries. the story is told there. :)

my reasons for liking him:

1. his leadership skills rival even those of cap. cap might always find a way to win under any circumstances, but cyke analyzes every possibility and outcome to any situation before it even happens.

2. without cyke, the xmen would have died countless times.

3. he's a born leader, and rightful heir of the xmen

4. he IS the heart and soul of the xmen.

5. his character has more layers than just about any character ever written in comics

6. even though its uncontrollable, his power kicks ass. being uncontrollable just adds to his character!

A long time ago, my dad heard me and my sisters bashing Cyclops and then he quickly defended him. After his long speech he said "I've always thought of myself as Cyclops." Then we cocked our eyebrows and pointed out that he was much more aggressive and even pointed out that he had three scars on his hand, exactly where Wolverine's claws would pop out.
