EDITORIAL: Defending The X-MEN Films And Fox In General

The X-Men films and Fox get a lot of flack on this site, everything from casting to deviation of source material. But is it really a valid argument? Do the Fox films deserve the amount of flack they get? Hit the jump to read BatmanHeisenberg’s article!

I’m going to say one or two things before I even delve into the article. READ THE ARTICLE BEFORE COMMENTING, ESPECIALLY TO TROLL. I have also not seen a few fox films, given the amount of people recommending me not to see them, or just haven’t found them yet. I have yet to see The Wolverine, DareDevil and Elektra. I probably will soon, but that doesn’t dismiss this article.

Before we get started, does anyone want to get out?

As I said in the teaser, Fox seems to get a lot of flack. Now, I’m not saying they are even close to perfect. I like three x-men films(X-men, X2, X-Men: First Class and I haven’t seen The Wolverine) and either haven’t seen or dislike everything else Fox has done CBM wise. I am going to say I am eagerly excited for the Fantastic Four. Despite a handful of fans, it seems the Fox films are hated by the comic book fan community. It seems to me that the biggest complaints is the constant deviations from the source material, casting and track record. Let diverge into the two most hated things they do:

Source Material:

I wrote an editorial on this very subject, so I will be brief. (You can check it out here: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/BombAsBenAffleck/news/?a=95475)

Yes, it diverges heavily in EVERY film from the comics. But hasn’t every studio? Maybe Marvel Studios and Sony might do it less, sure. But why do the films need to follow the source material so much? If we were to have CBM’s that followed source material exactly as we would want them to, what is the point of the CBM’s? We already have the comic books, so why do we need a CBM to retread that? Now, that isn’t to say I don’t like CBM’s that follow source material
closely, but I do like reinterpretations, because it gives us something fresh, new.

DC, Marvel Studios and Sony have all taken deviations from the comics. To make a list of them would be to damn long. My point? Fox isn’t the only one guilty of deviating from the source material a lot.

Casting:

I guess I wrote on this to. Ha! I’ll diverge into this more, so I don’t have to retread. (Check it out HERE, if you want: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fan_fic/news/?a=94618)

Hugh Jackman and the recent Fantastic Four cast seem to be the most hated when they were cast. The FF cast seems to be universally hated by CBM fans. Why this is is weird to me. The most hated choice is of course Michael B. Jordan. The reason why is usually because he is a black man playing a traditionally white character. I for one welcome the change. Most CBM roles are played by white guys. And I feel this minor change will not dictate the film in general and his relationship with his sister. Kate Mara hasn’t received a lot of flack, which is good, because she is, wait sorry, WAS amazing in House of Cards. People are saying they have to be adopted or some shit. Why can’t they be brother and sister still? There are plenty of siblings who have different skin colors but are full blooded. I will reiterate, it will very unlikely affect their relationship as a whole.

Another problem with the casting choices that people have are Miles Teller as Mr. Fantastic, mostly because he is younger than usually portrayed. Well, I’ll have you know they are adapting Ultimate Fantastic Four. So in that case, he is perfect for a young Mr. Fantastic. Now, you may not like that they are casting for a more Ultimate influenced film. Which is fine, but your beef isn’t with Teller, it’s with the writing. And the final choice people dislike is Jamie Bell. They feel he is little and can’t play the street tough former gangster. I think he can, and even if he isn’t, I think they might be doing something new and fresh.

Track Record:

I’ll admit, Fox doesn’t have the best track record. The previous FF films, Daredevil, Elektra, X-Men 3 and Origins: Wolverine. Like I said earlier, I haven’t seen The Wolverine YET, BUT, I have loved every other X-Men film to date.

So, yes, Fox doesn’t have the best track record. But does that mean they haven’t made quality CBM’s? I don’t think so.

Well, do you still hate Fox with a burning passion, or visa versa? Do you disagree or agree with me strongly? Sound off in the usual place, and watch the new kickass DoFP trailer!

People are idiots and think that if the rights go back to marvel we will keep getting xmen movies every 2 or 3 years even though it would be a 5 or 6 year gap with Marvel Studios

Good point, Dynamo. I think it is great that the properties are spread around the studios. More cbms, the more happy I am.

I agree, Last Stand was awful. I hated it as an eight year old, as I did Batman & Robin, as I do now.

the biggest problem i have with fox's x men is the continuous focus on wolverine and then giving characters like cyclops the shaft. they need to stop makeing wolverine the centre of everything. i liked X1 loved X2 hated X3 and origins, loved First class and wolverine was good.

I agree 100%

Fox has had its handful of films that arent that great but still enjoyable. I think its really silly and selfish to think that the comics are the end all and be all of the worlds the films are creating. Yes the comics is where you should draw all you inspiration but it shouldnt be a rehash of what we know and love from the comics. Thats what the cartoons are for. In film I want to see some real tension and drama. I want to believe a man can fly or shoot lasers out his eyes. I dont just want to see these things happening, because thats not artistic in anyway.

Everyone is allowed to put their stamp on a character. They have been doing it since Frankenstein and Dracula and The Mummy and Horror stuff for decades. SHakespeare gets redone and interpreted all the time. Not saying that all interpretations are great, but they are needed. Its how you keep the stories alive and fresh for generations. Every once in awhile its great to get a film that closely resembles the source material, but as a whole theres room for both.

I dont understand the hate of the FF cast. They are all talented. The whole lot of actors and Josh Trank are incredibly talented young actors and director. So they dont look like the comics... If you have an issue with that , then that is something you need to take a look at and seriously ponder why thats an issue.

If you dont like the films thats fine. But lets not hate on a film before it comes out. I understand if you dont want to see a film based on how theyve marketed it and who may be in the film or who wrote or directed it, but if you dont have anything to back it up besides im going to boycott the film because Johnny Storm is not Black. Then in my opinion you have some issues.

Anyway.. I agree with you man.

Last Stand was terrible.
Elektra was terrible.

All the other films in my opinion have qualities that are good and qualities that are bad. Within the CBMs by Fox they mostly need some work. Theyre enjoyable though in my opinion.

Great article. Thumbed.

I've always looked at it this way: We either get a crap load of CBMs every year from different studios or a couple a year all from the same studio.

Sony and FOX owning character rights means more movies every year. And they're not ALL bad. X2 and Spidey 2 are the best Marvel movies from FOX and Sony and are also two of the greatest CBMs of all time.

Fox has it's problems. As does Marvel, they're not the holy grail of CBM's.

Fox really shined when they took away Wolverine as the lead, First Class felt like an X Men film, it was about the characters not just Wolverine, about conflicting politics and ideologies, a friendship and i loved the romance between Mystique and Xavier. But then X Men was a really good start to the whole franchise, I thought 90% of the casting was perfection and making Rogue the tortured new member of the X Men was a nice dynamic, I just wished they fleshed her out and made her more of a badass in the sequels.

I have enjoyed all the x men movies. The only issue is that they seem to be all over the map with changes. I like the way marvel is trying to make things fit together. The costumes are ok, although I would eventually like to see wolverine in his we'll know outfit.
