James McAvoy's Third X-MEN Outing Is When He'll Base Professor X After Patrick Stewart's Portrayal

X-Men: Days of Future Past will begin filming soon which has James McAvoy reflecting on his previous portrayal of Charles Xavier and at the characters development arc over a third (sixth?) X-Men film.

Speaking to the Huffington Post to promote his new film, Trance - directed by Danny Boyle; actor James McAvoy also discussed a few tidbits on Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past.

McAvoy responds to a question of whether he was surprised by the positive fan reaction to his portrayal of Professor X in X-Men: First Class. McAvoy played the character much differently than his predecessor, Patrick Stewart.

"There's a little element in the script in the first couple of pages of Charles' character where he seems like he's sort of picking up a girl in a bar. And I thought, Let's take that and run with it. I kind of pushed and pushed -- to really try to take him as far away from the Professor X that we've seen before in the comics and the cartoon and as portrayed by Patrick in the movies as well -- he's kind of like a monk. He's a sage. And he's wise and he's very in control of himself and sort of selfless. I wanted to take him the opposite way -- without making him a bad guy. But, make him selfish and a little bit egotistical and all of those things. I think that helped -- the fact I wasn't actually trying to do Patrick Stewart in the body of a 30-year-old man. I think if I would have done that, people would have rejected me."

With First Class over and done, is there going to be a shift in McAvoy's portrayal of the professor in Days of Future Past? At the conclusion of First Class, we have Charles in the familiar wheelchair and the film will be taking place nearly a decade later. All factors that mean McAvoy should be studying Patrick Stewart very closely.....right?

"No. Not yet. I think that may come. I mean, who knows? Who knows where it's going to go? That may come in the third movie but definitely not in this movie. We're not in the same place that we were in the first movie with Charles -- a very different place from there. But we're also still on a very different place from where Patrick was in the other movies."

Interesting. McAvoy has his script for Days of Future Past finally and he's been in touch with Bryan Singer and others in the film's cast. Have discussions about a third X-Men prequel/sequel already begun? It's also very interesting to hear that nearly 10 years after the events of First Class, McAvoy's Professor X still isn't very similar to the one first portrayed by Patrick Stewart back in 2000. What other sobering events will occur in Days of Future Past that will change him into the sage and wise mentor of the X-Men?

Great, it shows how much growing a person can do. If I compare myself now to myself a decade or two ago, they wouldnt even be close to the same. Back then the thought of the settled down life, was the furthest thing from my mind. Now I look back and say what a idiot I was. Greatfull for all the experience, good and bad, but I love my life now more so.

Makes sense. He's still a young man compared to the wise mentor that Stewart plays. The young Xavier still has a lot to learn himself. A good comparison is Ewan McGregor's portrayl of a young Obi-Wan.

Yeah hopefully they will update the title- it's completely wrong. However heatring that there will probably be a 3rd First Class movie is good news.

Stewart's portrayal was pretty spot-on I thought. But if anything he played him too kindly... Xavier in the comics was often an off-putting jerk. I kinda like it that way because it gives Cyclops that edge of being caught between the team and the Professor.
So I think it's cool to get to see young(er) Charles before he becomes more of a serious, somewhat hardened man.
Can't wait.!

This article has a terrible title. How could he portray him like Patrick Stewart in the third X-Men movie when that movie has already been made? I understand you are looking for hits, but come on man, that's just awful writing.

That IS some nice artwork on Sinister.

I can respect that McAvoy wants to bring his own take to Professor X rather than just imitating Patrick Stewart, but I wouild hope that he takes his inspiration for playing Professor X in this film from the actual comics that the film is based upon. After all, what better source is there for drawing inspiration for the way to play a character than the source material? First Class was one thing since it was not based upon any comics, but Days of Future Past is.

Personally, I wish they were doing this story as an animated film, in the spirit of DC's excellent animated films that are based on actual comics stories. Animated films almost always do a far superior job of bringing great stories to life without butchering what made them classics in the first place. Bring on the juvenile name-calling for me daring to say this publicly! DC is obviously making money on those animated films since they keep producing them. Marvel is associated with Disney, who certainly has a capable animation department ready to cash in on some of Marvel's classic stories. Comic lovers everywhere would be the winners from that.

the evolution to Patrick's version of Charles should be slowly, but since this right movie, not just on the third part, supposedly to be on the 80's.

Human being keeps some characteristics and gestures even with pass of time, so James cant play a totally different Charles on this movie since he IS, in fact, playing the same character, just younger. Its not about playing two totally different persons.

@Batmaniac You're missing my point he does the EXACT same thing or worst, bring up other movies that have nothing to do with an article(ex. bringing up IM3 in an X-Men article) & trying to start shit.

If he does get a third they should get Ratner. Then hire Singer for Man of Steel 2 and get things right.

Holy nitpicking folks... Unless the title has been changed, I read the title and the article and understood exactly what @markjulian meant.

As for the people that say "don't bash my favorite movie".....seriously?!?!

This is basically an informational website that encourages blogging and constructive criticism. Now some of it is trolling, ill admit, but a lot of times I read comments and feel more informed about that particular story, movie or comic, than I did prior to reading the article and comments.

Just one dark lords humble opinion...

Marvel87,

I never say shit like "MCU is a huge shit stain" or I'M NOT INTERESTED a million times.

I do point out things I don't like and like however. That is perfectly fine. Writing off A WHOLE concept is beyond retarded.

MCU is widely praised on this site at the expense of Fox's X-Men and F4, Sony's Spider-Man (and I HATED TASM), Warner Bros. Batman.

So no I do not write a ton about the MCU as there's no reason to, most of you do it already.

Nomis: As often happens, I couldn't agree with you more.

Please join me in being proud to wear the honorary title of "purist". I fully embrace it because I don't understand why they can't make movies that are closer to the comic books, especially when adapting actual stories such as Days of Future Past. The whole story is already written and storyboarded. Just get the lighting and sound guys in, hire some actors, build the sets, and shoot it. A general movie about superheroes can blend styles from several interpretations of a character to create something new, but one based on an existing story should follow the story as written.
