Michael Fassbender On X-Men: First Class Sequel, Hopes Vaughn Returns To Direct

The Irish-German actor speaks briefly to Collider about returning for a sequel to the hugely popular First Class. He also expresses his desire to see Mathew Vaughn return as director..

Beyond being fairly sure a sequel to X-Men: First Class will happen at some point (we know a screenplay is being worked on at least) we don't know much else about it. Unfortunately neither does Michael Fassbender. He does tell Collider that he is looking forward to getting back to it, coming up with some of his own ideas, and hopefully working with the first film's director Mathew Vaughn who is not confirmed to return as of yet..

Collider: X-Men: First Class was both a critical and commercial hit. What are you looking forward to with the sequel, and do you know when you’ll start filming?

Fassbender: I have no idea. I’m looking forward to working with all those people again. We had a lot of fun. It was a great cast and a great crew. Hopefully, I’ll get in at ground level and start putting some ideas together myself, with James [McAvoy] and, hopefully, (director) Matthew [Vaughn], and we can see what happens next.

I’m really interested to see what happens to Charles (James McAvoy), in the next one, and see how he becomes Professor X ‘cause we got to see Erik turn into Magneto, in the first one. It will be interesting to see who shaves Charles’ head. When he’s drunk one night, the mutants will go in there and shave his head and shave off his eyebrows. Maybe.

Hair and eyebrows eh? Certainly be an interesting look! Fassbender has been very bust recently promoting two movies in which he has garnered critical acclaim; A Dangerous Method and Shame. While I look forward to both I don't think I'm alone in hoping we see him back under Magneto's helmet sooner rather than later.

@marvel72 well his Wolverine cameo was set in 1979, which is close enough to the 80s, and besides, that's out of continuity. As for the First Class cameo, that was just a little Easter egg for eagle eyed fans, and could be easily written off as some other mutant who happened to look like Scott and wear similar glasses. Otherwise, they had no excuse for not using him anyway.

For all intents and purposes, First Class is a prequel to Singer's first 2 X-Men films, thanks to things like Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn cameoing as Wolverine and older Mystique, and the shot for shot recreation of the Poland opening with Magneto and the gate. So, to avoid any more continuity conflicts (again, easy to write off small instances of dialogue in X-Men conflicting the events of First Class), Cyclops, Jean and maybe Storm need to be introduced in a time period which is believable as a link to the first X-Men (although the X-Men were about 20 when that film was made, they look as if they could pass for their 30s)

Either that, or they should try to set up the First Class series as a reboot and somehow make Hugh Jackman as Wolverine fit in since he cameoed.

@nuck82 I think MovieTheaterLad is referring to the movie continuity, not the comics.

@Scorpion8125: Same. After ten years... continuity even within their own mixed up universe is a lost cause. I'd just like them to keep up X:FC continuity.

As long as Vaughn and Fassbender stay on I'm down but a teenage Scott&Jean, Storm, and Sentinels would be very much preferred... kinda want Dazzler too. 8D

MTL@ Cyclops made his first appearance in 1963, as already mentioned. I don't think the decade and continuity is even an issue now as it is already messed up. Scott was Xavier's first recruit as an X-Men, so it hardly makes any sense that he isn't part of the next film. They already blew it not having him part of First Class. First Class was pretty "Meh" for me. I can take it or leave it. As a decent popcorn flick I can take it and as an X-Men adaptation I leave it far behind. I am tired of Magneto and would rather see another adversary take the spotlight in the next couple films. I'm probably in the minority for that one.

The first was a good movie.

Of course everyone would like a more comicbook approach on the story, but it was a good movie anyway.

Now, I really hope they get the right way on making these movies after this one.

I fear for Wolverine and XMFC sequel.

Can't wait for the sequel.

If Vaughn doesn't come back, bring in Bryan Singer. The dude may have [frick]ed up the Superman series, but his X-Men films were very solid IMO.

i dont think they should of had erik go off on his own with the brotherhood yet because now the sequel will just be like the original xmen movies,id of liked to have seen charlies and eriks relationship grow a little more before, still a brilliant film anyways

The opening of X-Men: First Class wasn't a shot for shot recreation, it was the sam efooage with the young actor's shot cut and the new actor inserted. It was very impressive.

@Ranger14: Yeah, you make an excellent point. Scott was Professor X's first student, as mentioned in the first X-men film, and from what I recall of the comics. I'm still annoyed about Alex Summers being in the film. There are SO MANY mutants that can control energy, but I suppose if Scott was in there it would be too much like the original films. But, given the disaster of X3, Scott really does need to be redeemed, as a character, done justice. He better be in the next film. Scott, Jean, AND Storm.

@Darkside: I agree. I wanted to see Charles in at least another film, being part of an expanding team of mutants, before he became paralyzed.

I enjoyed First Class alot - the only thing I'd hope they would improve on, or retcon if the case maybe, is the Xavier - Magneto friendship. It needed to be bigger, span a few years, include them shooting the breeze about building a Savage Land or whatever.

Marvel72, the problem with you is even when someone like ACira gives you a good explanation as to how the continuity works in the X-men film universe you just shrug it off with a quick one line rebuttal. It doesn't take a lot of effort to just say, 'it sucks.'
