In a surprising turn of events, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Rosario Dawson has left Josh Boone's upcoming X-Men spin-off New Mutants and will be replaced by Alice Braga. She'll take over the role of Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a character that THR describes as "a medical doctor who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself but also has more going on than she lets on."
Reasons weren't provided for Dawson's departure, but a scheduling conflict with her Marvel Netflix shows may have played a part in her decision making. Luckily, filming had yet-to-begin in Boston, so the production schedule will likely remain unaffected by this casting change.
The principal cast features Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why), and Blu Hunt (The Originals). Boone is helming with a script he co-wrote with his longtime writing partner Knate lee.
Braga is best known to audiences for her roles in sci-fi thrillers like I Am Legend, Elysium, and Predators. She currently stars on the USA Network drama Queen of the South.
