Singer Still Linked to X-Men but also Remakes of Jack the Giant Killer and Excalibur

Variety sheds light on 3 potential projects for the ex-X director.

After some wrangling, Warner Bros. and Legendary have secured the rights to remake John Boorman’s Excalibur with Singer linked as producer and possible director. A curious move as the source material, even if you count that as Malory and not just the Arthurian myths in essence, is definitely in the public domain. What is it about Boorman’s version that they wanted to secure? Maybe it’s just a preemptive move to totally lock out any potential of a lawsuit? Gotta love megabudget filmmaking and it’s wheelbarrows of dollarcrats.

The same story tells us that “Singer has been flirting with directing” the X-Men: First Class side-quel. A little surprising, perhaps, that of the in-development X-pictures it is this one and not the next Wolverine movie he’s being linked with, not least because his regular collaborator Christopher McQuarrie has set about scripting that one.

None of First Class, Excalibur or Battlestar Galactica seems likely to be Singer’s next directing project however, with the same Variety story suggesting that he’s currently gearing up to move on Jack the Giant Killer. They describe the story as being about “a young farmer who leads an expedition into the land of the giants to recover a kidnapped princess”.

Anyone remember Jack The Giant Killer? I loved it when i was a kid. Excalibur too. A proper telling of the Arthurian legend unlike that soulless crap King Arthur with Clive Owen.

SINGER should'nt be doing the FIRST CLASS movie! But he'd be cool for a X4!!! Bring X-MEN back again!!!

EXCALIBUR?? He should friggin' do the MARVEL EXCALIBUR!!! ;)

A good epic tale of Excalibur would be a welcome change. It's been awhile.

@Rorschach01 - For what it was "King Arthur" was a different take and had a lot of cool elements to it. The idea of each knight specializing in their own weapon and style was an awesome idea and Stellan Skarsgard did a good job as the bad guy. I guess the trick to enjoying that movie was canning everything you know about the mythology and letting the film present it in a different way.

im not too bothered about the other two movie but i hope that Singer comes nowhere near the X-Men franchise ever again!!!

Weapon X to be honest even as a movie i didn't find it very good at all. As you said there were some good bits and i enjoyed Skarrsgard and Ray Winston's performances but it was very badly executed. Then when you factor in that they completely jettisoned all of the magic and stuff that made the tale so interesting in the first place its just a failure to me. I mean Merlin was in 2 scenes! He had about 2 lines of dialog..MERLIN!

@Rorschach01 - I get what what you mean, that's why I said if one was to enjoy this movie they really had to bin what they previously knew of the mythology. It did fall short but at the same time I can somewhat appreciate the movie for what they were trying to do which is make the myth more grounded and less romantic/fantastical. Merlin being a Druid with a rough and wild look was an interesting way to go as well as the knights being individuals who brought their own unique style and even Guenevere being a part of Merlin's camp and a warrior to boot. Very different from the norm and, to me, was entertaining to see someone go outside the box like that. Granted not the best piece of cinema, the story was rushed and it had a faster pace than what it really needed. But if they had the time and budget to really explore that angle I think it would have been very good.

I feel a goodly ammount of cynicism when it comes to this guy. I mean I didn't hate SuperMan Returns anywhere near as much as most people seem to. In fact I didn't hate it at all.

My problem with Singer is that he dropped the ball on X - men 3. And just look at the horrible mess that created on many fronts. I know he has talent and skills. He's a great story teller but the sting of X3 just taints everything and everyone who made it happen the way it did.

I like Returns too Darthmulder! Also, you can't blame Singer for Ratner [frick]ing up X3. He gave us 2 good X movies and thought he would rather do Supes than a 3rd one. Its not his fault the studio hired a hack to complete the trilogy. When he left Paul Greengrass was on board so he probably thought it was in safe hands.

Has anyone heard what Brad Pitt had to say about Valkyrie the other day? "Ridiculous!" he called it. He's got some balls lol!! I'll have to see his Inglorious Basterds...

very True, Mr Rorschach01. Quite so. I am not really blaming him, I just so very much wish he hadn't done what he did.

I just can't help but wish things had turned out differently. Not with Superman, but with X Men.

BUT I will say this. I feel a very strong sense of empathy towards all the people who were let down by the Singer Superman. I know how it feels to have something you care about get all messed up. I like Superman but in my collection I only have about ten or fifteen that even have him in it so it's hard for me to be so bullish about it. So to those who hate on Superman Returns I do understand

SINGER didn't do a bad job on X-MEN an X2 at all, what makes me laugh about the haters is when X2 came out everyone loved him lol, at the time everyone was saying the best comic book movie in history! Then he makes SUPERMAN RETURN (Which i also liked) an you get haters hating him for not just SUPERMAN but X-MEN too!!! An he had nothing to do with X-MEN 3 an ORIGINS lmao!!! ; D

I didn't like the any of the X films. The first two were OK at best, and that's a stretch. Superman Returns was a steaming pile of refuse. Singers only good film is The Usual Suspects, aside from that he's a hack.

Why reboot Excalibur? The film is brilliant, if they want to update Excalibur, take the original, and enhance it/restore it and then re-release it as is.

Let Singer do Jack the Giant Killer for the kids, and keep him away from X movies, then let somebody else take a shot at the X franchise.

I like alot of singers work,i just don't think movies that were great to begin with should be redone/rebooted.With all the material in comic books, graphic novels & elsewhere , there are more than enough ideas for new movies out there.

There is a pretty lengthy interview with Singer and Charlie Rose on one of my Xmen bonus discs. He does have a bit of a stick up his ass, and he's very shiny on TV. He's also responsible for Kevin Spacey's worst performance imo (or at least putting him in the worst context for him to give his worst performance)... for me, an unforgivable sin.

That said, it seems to be the general consensus that his Xmen movies are by far the best yet, and I agree. Last thing I read directly from him was that if Magneto was going to be set in Nazi Germany he didn't want to do it because "he'd just spent the last two years of his life exploring that space".

I just hope they get someone competent enough to fix the whole mess and pay attention to the continuity. It can still be easily redeemed - I thought of a fix for X3 (you guys have probably already thought of it) - I mean they could just open with X3 VERY quickly rewinding like either Xavier or Jean Grey is in Cerebro looking at "what the future holds" if they don't do something to fix it, and it will be like Ratner's drunken shaky scalpel never got near the franchise.

Just thought I'd throw that out there...

Ok, they really need to make an x-men 4 movie because the first 3 was still about wolverine. Don't get me wrong Wolverine is my favorite but its x-men not wolverine and the x-men. the first 2 movie was ok they need to make it more like the comic books, good story line and action. they have the technology to make more affect then just like on seen like the end of x-men one.

They really need to start staying with the comic books a little more. They don't have to stay exact but supposedly killing (I don't believe it) cyclops and Jean is just wrong. They butchered the movie and I will not stand for it, I getting tired of telling every one "even in the treater" that's not how Stan Lee Written it!

Beast mutant powers didn't turn him blue and Juggernaut is not a mutant so he would have went right through that wall.

We need a good script writer and a good director!

Been a Marvel fan all my life and want to see something good happen before my time is over.
My personal thought is I think Fantastic 4 the First one is like the only marvel movie they did right. I am an X-MEN and Silver Surfer Fan all the was but the stuck by Stan Lee's work on that movie, so it was a good one and wasn't disappointing.
