LOGAN Director Reveals There Were Discussions About A WOLVERINE/DEADPOOL Project While Making The 2017 Movie

Logan director James Mangold has revealed that discussions about a Wolverine/Deadpool crossover began when they were shooting that movie, and he even shares a few details about what it once looked like.

In next year's Deadpool 3, Ryan Reynolds' Merc with the Mouth and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine will finally share the screen. While we did see the two characters interact in the ill-fated X-Men Origins: Wolverine, that wasn't exactly the Deadpool fans had spent years waiting to see stand side-by-side with Logan.

It's thought the two unlikely allies will head on a trip through the Multiverse, tying into Marvel Studios' Multiverse Saga and potentially leaving them both stranded in the MCU in time for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

We'd thought Jackman's tenure as Wolverine had ended in 2017's Logan (which was directed by James Mangold), but no superhero ever stays dead and the events of Deadpool 3 are expected to take place prior to the events of that tear-jerking adventure.

Talking to Inverse, Mangold revealed that talks of a meeting between Wolverine and Deadpool actually began while he and Jackman were making Logan.

"I've made a bunch of movies with Hugh Jackman now," the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director recalls. "We're good friends and we talked a lot. And one of the things we talked about a lot, even while we were making Logan, was the idea of how joyful a kind of Midnight Run or 48 Hrs. with Deadpool and Logan would be. So I completely understand those guys chasing that idea."

Seeing as Deadpool 2 would have been in production around the same time as Logan, we're guessing it was then that Reynolds started bugging Jackman about a meet-up in a third instalment.

The movies Mangold mentions are both action comedies which saw their respective leads forced to work together despite not liking each other. Needless to say, we expect that to be the case in Deadpool 3 as well.

As for how he feels about the upcoming threequel, Mangold added, "I never was under any illusion that there wouldn't be a new movie, even with potentially a new Wolverine, coming out in the not-too-distant future."

"With properties like this, I just view them as opportunities to make my version. For me, Logan was just my ideal version of a kind of Logan story."

Deadpool 3 is set to be released in theaters on May 3, 2024.

Mangold coming out like a total baby.
He's so mad his piece of shit Indiana Jones movie is going to suck, now he's coming out with loose lips.

I kind of hope Gunn just kicks this guy off Swamp Thing. He's never done anything great, and judging by the way he's talking recently, doesn't deserve to be held in high secret for anything coming down the pike.

Kick him out, Gunny, before he gets to do some stupid shit in there. We need someone strong on that whole Swamp Thing/Animal Man world. I think Del Toro, or in absence of that, Noah Hawley.

But really starting to think [frick] this Mangold guy.

Man people kept saying the MCU should let Wolverine rest for 10 years or something after Logan, so they can distance themselves from Hugh Jackman's portrayal.

But we're right back at square one with him coming back in DP3. Dude I'm not waiting another 7-10 years for a new Wolverine just because they've reset the clock with Jackman like this, lmao. I don't care if we get a new actor 1 month after DP3 or even in the same movie, we need to move on from Jackman already.

@Kurne - I'd put good money on Dafne Keen as X-23 being brought in in a post-credit scene to be the MCU's Wolverine.

I'm glad Ryan's getting to do something he's wanted for years. I'm in the minority, but I don't think Logan is untouchable. I've always found it overrated to some extent. I just can’t wait until with get a new version

So I was rewatching the Multiverse entries of the MCU again yesterday in this order: Ant-Man Quantumania, Loki, Wandavision, Spider-Man No Way Home, and Multiverse of Madness. Then I rewatched Deadpool 2 and saw that Cable's time device could play scenes the way the TVA could and thought what if Cable's time traveling capabilities came from the Kang of his universe? And the Kang we saw at the end of Loki is actually the Kang from the Deadpool verse? And he sends out the TVA to prune and eradicate both Deadpool and Cable. Cable and Colossus get pruned while Deadpool and Domino escape into the the Multiverse using the tempads and end up in a universe where the X-Men are active and his obsession with Wolverine forces the TVA and the "villain" to reign hell on that timeline and Deadpool, Domino, and Wolverine escape and go onto more Multiversal shenanigans to escape?
