2017's Logan is widely regarded as the best of 20th Century Fox's X-Men films, and many would go a step further and say it's among the best comic book movies, full stop - including Ryan Reynolds.
The Deadpool and Wolverine star has expressed his fondness for James Mangold's R-rated drama in the past (Wade Wilson's "death" scene in Deadpool 2 is a direct parody/homage of Logan's emotional send-off), and had the highest of praise for the movie while speaking to Total Film about the upcoming MCU threequel.
"The movies were quite congruent with each other at that point," Reynolds said of Logan coming out soon after the first Deadpool. "Deadpool was different, and then right after Logan was potentially the greatest comic-book adaptation ever made."
Logan was originally supposed to serve as Hugh Jackman's farewell as the iconic mutant hero, but he was convinced to don the claws one more time(?) for a team-up with the Merc With a Mouth.
"I was on my way, I was just driving, and literally, just like a bolt of lightning, came this knowing deep in my gut that I wanted to do this film with Ryan [Reynolds]," Jackman told Fandango in an interview earlier this year. "For Deapdool and Wolverine to come back together. I swear to you, When I said I was done, I really thought I was done. But in the back of my head, ever since I saw Deadpool 1, I was like, 'Those two characters together.' I knew it, I knew the fans wanted it ever since I put on the claws, people talked about these two. So, that had always been there, but I just knew."
The MPAA recently gave the movie an official R-rating for: "Strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore, and sexual references."
“Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date - Deadpool & Wolverine," reads the new synopsis. "A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier... reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to - F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.”
In addition to Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the title roles, Deadpool and Wolverine will see Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Rob Delaney (Peter), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead) And Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) return as their respective characters, and they'll be joined by franchise newcomers Emma Corrin (The Crown) and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), who will play a TV agent and Charles Xavier's evil counterpart, Cassandra Nova.
Shawn Levy directs Deadpool and Wolverine from a script by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.
The movie is set to open in U.S. & Canadian theaters on July 26, and will be available in IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, 4DX, Cinemark XD and premium screens everywhere.
