Hugh Jackman Talks WOLVERINE 3, Retirement, X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, & Teases DEADPOOL Cameo
Hugh Jackman has gone on the record to say Wolverine 3 will be his final go-round as the fan favorite mutant and while that is sad news for fans everywhere, that doesn't necessarily mean he won't appear in 2016's Deadpool and/or X-Men: Apocalypse! Come see what he had to say!
In 2017, after seventeen amazing years, Hugh Jackman finally hangs up the claws and walks away from Wolverine.
Considering it's getting harder and harder to remember a time when Jackman wasn't playing the fast-healing mutant, his last time as Wolverine will certainly be a sad day for fans everywhere. Even though he's officially gone on record to say Wolverine 3 will be his final appearance as the fan-favorite character, it's starting to look more and more like there may be a good chance we see Jackman pop up in at least one, maybe even two, X-Men universe films before then. It's been long-rumored that Jackman will make some sort of appearance in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse and there has recently been mutual interest in a potential cameo in the Ryan Reynolds-starrer Deadpool.
At the recent premiere of Jackman's documentary Dukale's Dream, the Huffington Post caught up with the Academy Award-nominated actor and managed to squeeze in a question about whether or not he could speak on the Deadpool cameo rumor. Jackman coyly replied:
"Hmmm, I can't ... no. Nope," Jackman mumbled under his lips while giving off a sweet smile. "But, I am really good mates with [Reynolds] so ..."
When asked about X-Men: Apocalypse, Jackman replied with an equally intriguing "Who knows?"
Deadpool recently wrapped, so if a Wolverine cameo is planned, there's a good chance it will be shot during post-production to keep it as confidential as possible. X-Men: Apocalypse is currently shooting and is expected to shoot deep into September, so there's more than enough time for Jackman to head up to Montreal and film a few scenes. After a few recent health scares, Jackman is currently healthy again and in the process of slowly getting back into Wolverine shape, so it may be a few more weeks before he's ready to suit up again.
Speaking on his upcoming retirement, Jackman says he felt it was just time to move on, describing it as preferring to leave the party rather than getting kicked out of the party. He spoke a little on what factors played into him making the decision and how he did have doubts before making the call:
"There was a period about six years ago when I could see my choices being narrowed by Wolverine, but now I feel like they've opened up from doing 'Les Mis' or 'Prisoners' or 'Pan.' The options coming to me right now are more varied than they've ever been in my life," He jokingly added of what's to come. "Hopefully, I'm not that actor in 10 years who's unemployed going, 'Why did I ever leave it?' and then begging to come back."
He was thankful to 20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment for casting him so many years ago, and being so supportive to him throughout his career, but also acknowledges that the studios are likely already looking toward the future at the next star to put on the claws:
"They were all really supportive -- 17 years is a long time," he said. "And I'm sure that they've already started casting, you know? Someone may sign up for an 11-picture deal, as we speak."
As for the James Mangold-directed Wolverine 3, Jackman is more than excited to get started on what will be his final adventure:
"Weirdly, I'm really excited about shooting it. I feel great enthusiasm, I suppose it's denial -- like the football player who announces their retirement before their last season -- and so I'm really looking forward to it. But, I know it's not over yet! I still got a lot of 4 o'clock mornings and a hell of a lot of egg white omelettes and steamed chicken to have, and all of that.
I feel very blessed that I loved playing this part, the last 'Wolverine' and that last 'X-Men' ['Days of Future Past'] were maybe two of the best and I feel like, hopefully, we'll do it again with this last one."
Jackman suiting up as Wolverine will never not be a great thing and two potential Wolverine appearances in addition to his final appearance sounds like a great way for all fans to say goodbye to the character. This is a lot of information to process, so what do you guys think of the news? Excited to see Jackman potentially show up in Deadpool and/or X-Men Apocalypse? Excited for the Wolverine 3?
