20th Century Fox confirmed plans for a Wolverine spinoff movie from its successful X-Men franchise.

A studio spokesman said the film is in development with a script in the works but no director has been assigned. Troy scripter David Benioff has previously been cited as being the screenwriter.

Initial reports from an industry conference in Amsterdam yesterday suggested the film was headed for a 2007 release but a Fox spokesman later said it's doubtful the movie would be ready until 2008. Star Hugh Jackman is expected to do another movie first for director Baz Luhrmann. Jackman touted the Wolverine film in a videotaped appearance at the show.
