X-Men Fan Art May Give Us An Idea Of How Maya Boyd Will Look As Storm In MCU Reboot

Maya Boyd is set to play Storm in Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot, and this new fan-art may give us some idea of how the up-and-coming actress will look as the powerful mutant hero...

As expected, several main cast members for Marvel Studios' long-awaited X-Men reboot were announced during D23 last night, including Maya Boyd as Storm.

Boyd, who had not been rumored for the role (most recently, we had heard that Poor Things actress Suzy Bemba was in contention), is a complete newcomer, having previously appeared only on stage. She made her Broadway debut in the Tony-winning revival of Merrily We Roll Along, and played the title role in & Juliet.

Maya, 23, earned her BFA in musical theatre from the University of Michigan, and was still finishing her senior year when her big Broadway break came.

The rest of the officially announced cast are: Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury (aka Mr. Sinister).

We are expecting a few more additions (Beast and Magneto, at the very least), but it's looking like the rumor that the core team will consist of the OG comic book crew (Cyclops, Jean, Beast, Ice-Man, and Angel) may not have been accurate.

Ororo Munroe has had quite a few different looks in the comics over the years, but this new artwork from Boss Logic may give us some idea of how the character will be depicted in the movie.

Director Jake Schreier said the following in a post-event interview with GMA.

“Digging into those comics like the Chris Claremont run and the newer Jonathan Hickman stuff. There are so many stories that are still untold.”

Sonny Lee Sung Jin (Beef) and Joanna Calo (The Bear) recently came aboard to write a new draft of Michael Lesslie's script.

Kevin Feige teased Marvel's plans for the X-Men shortly after SDCC.

"Acquiring the X-Men rights isn't just about... for example, Wolverine is an outstanding character, and we were able to team him up with Deadpool, which is great. But the X-Men are far more than just Wolverine, far more than the original team; fundamentally, it's a universe, a multi-stage saga. Much of that is what we're working towards."

"We’re constantly changing, constantly evolving, but having some guidance helps us act more purposefully, especially with X-Men—it’s already had 10 movies, some very, very good, some I think haven’t lived up to expectations—how do we plan the 'mutant saga' in a very grand way?"

"That being said, we have many more characters to explore in the future—the schedule is already booked until 2042, especially the X-Men," Feige added. "The X-Men have many unexplored characters from the Asia-Pacific region, particularly China, which we're very eager to explore. That's why I'm excited about the X-Men: we can show the world different types of heroes."

I think the actual look will be even better than that. Mads didn’t get Doom so Magneto would be a great fit. With the reboot it shouldn’t matter that he played that throw away villain in Dr. Strange

@Bucky74 - I'd prefer Lee Pace as Magneto but Mads isn't a bad choice.

For all of the recent castings, it has been mostly good, although not perfect. If I had to grade them all, it would be...

Sadie Sink (Jean Grey) GRADE A-
Kit Connor (Cyclops) GRADE A
Christopher Abbott (Charles Xavier) GRADE B
Samara Weaving (Emma Frost) GRADE A-
Inde Navarrette (Rogue) GRADE B-
Maya Boyd (Storm) GRADE B
Adam Driver (Mr. Sinister) GRADE B+
David Jonsson (Black Panther) GRADE C

@Forthas - I'd say

Sadie Sink (Jean Grey) GRADE C
Kit Connor (Cyclops) GRADE B+
Christopher Abbott (Charles Xavier) GRADE D-
Samara Weaving (Emma Frost) GRADE A+
Inde Navarrette (Rogue) GRADE F
Maya Boyd (Storm) GRADE B-
Adam Driver (Mr. Sinister) GRADE B
David Jonsson (Black Panther) GRADE D

@Forthas - Adam Driver is a solid A.

@FireGunn - I get the David Jonsson skepticism, but what is wrong with Sadie Sink, Christopher Abbott and Inde Navarrette? I grant you that Inde Navarrette does not look the part, but to be fair, neither does Hugh Jackman.

@SummersEssex - I don't see the resemblance to Sinister. I think he would have made for a better Sebastian Shaw. I see more resemblance there...

@Forthas - 1. I actually liked Sadie when she was first cast but after her performance in Brand New Day, combined with how awfully she was written in that movie, I'm very down on the casting. It could be worst because she still at least looks like a young Jean but I'm not at all hyped for her Jean anymore. I'd prefer not to see her but it is what it is.

2. With Abbott, I don't like him at all. Not just in this role but any. I don't think he's a particular good actor and he fits the role just as much as Inde fits Rogue. He should be replaced with someone like Jude Law who I know was in Captain Marvel but A) They're rebooting anyways and B) Gemma Chan is in multiple MCU projects as well.

3. Inde is a great actress but her height (only 5 foot) combined with the fact that she looks and exudes nothing about Rogue, I just find the casting atrocious. Being a good actor doesn't always mean you're the best fit for the role. There's a reason Chris Hemsworth won the Thor position over Tom Hiddelston despite Hiddleston being 10x the actor. I'd 100% prefer Margaret Qualley. Also, her being cast just feels like a corporation capitalizing off of recent popularity and stunt/hype casting.

@FireGunn - "Also, her being cast just feels like a corporation capitalizing off of recent popularity and stunt/hype casting."

There is also the issue of money. I was in the Odessa A'zion camp but at the end of the day, it could have been a situation in which the money was not right, the actor had some misgivings, or maybe some insider politics. I am not thrilled with the casting but I have seen MUCH WORSE...

@Nomis929 - She kind of does. I saw one picture of her where she looked like a mix of Angela Basset and Lauryn Hill. If X-Men had been done in the '90s, Angela Basset would have been perfect, but she was a little too old by 2000 in my opinion.

I’m still expecting Bob Drake, Henry McCoy and Warren Worthington III to round out the cast, as they are OG X-Men and should appear. Would be a huge disservice to not include them.

Would also love to have Rogue start as a villain and actually take Carol Danvers powers.

So much potential.

Hope they don’t squander it.

@MuadDib - ...exactly what I have been saying for the longest....Rogue needs to be introduced as a villain so the Xmen can fight a true Evil group and illuminate Captain Marvel.

@incredibleTalk - I’m hoping they don’t gloss over some characters backstories. Im keeping my fingers crossed there are further casting announcements and that this isn’t the full roster. They can leave Wolverine out of this altogether, there’s been too much focus on him for far too long. But we should at a minimum get the OG X-Men, even if only In flashbacks.

Would have preferred a movie focused on the OG’s before introducing members of the Red and Blue teams but we’ll see. They may have only introduced Storm bc she’ll be in BP3. Rogue being announced with Mystique could indicate no backstory.

@MuadDib - Totally agreed. This is the way to go.

I'd go even beyond that, dedicating the 1st film to the OG members stories, only forming the group in the end.

In a second film, present the brotherhood and flesh out the team aspect.

In the 3rd, the OG team gets in trouble (doesn't need to be Krakoa) and a version of the All-New X-Men team is assembled.
