X-Men: First Class Beats Thor's Box Office For Opening Night

X-Men: First Class Beats Thor's Box Office For Opening Night

The figures are in for First Class's Midnight launch last night. How did Matthew Vaughn's pre-boot do? Not quite as well as Fox's last X movie(Wolverine funnily enough), but just edging out Marvel's Thor..

Box Office Mojo reports..

6/3 Update: In its midnight launch, X-Men: First Class pulled in $3.37 million at 1,783 locations. That edged out Thor's $3.25 million midnight opening at 1,800 locations, but it trailed X-Men Origins: Wolverine's $5 million midnight start at 2,000 locations. So far this year, The Hangover Part II is the top midnight draw at $10.4 million, followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' $4.7 million and Fast Five's $3.8 million.

If First Class continues this way it could earn closer to $65 million in (Thor grossed $65.7)it's first weekend. Still early days of course, but it's extremely unlikely that the movie will come to any kind of screeching halt. Of course, as we all(or we all should anyway) know, how much cash a movie makes is really no reflection on it's quality. Just look how much green the latest Pirates Of The Caribbean is raking in. So even if First Class Hammers Thor at the box office, it doesn't mean it's a better movie. I mean it IS a better movie..but that's just a coincidence:)

Thor was not that good, everyone needs to admit this, for anyone to say its one of the top 3 comic book movies is just crazy. I'm sick of everyone saying it was "EPIC", in fact, I'm sick of that word. For a movie to be epic I expect there to be more than 4 sets. (Jotenheim, The throne room, the Bifrost bridge, and a new mexico town is not epic.) Don't get me wrong, it was good, but not great, it was entertaining, but I wasn't impressed. X-Men First Class is worlds better, and that's hard for me to say, but its true. Tired of people acting like Thor is the end all be all. Out of the two CBM's so far this summer it is the weakest. I see Captain America and First class being the best of the summer, but we'll see.

actually i am surprised at this. especially since the last too were way below par. i think this will gross a lot in the long run too. the reviews are gona drive this movie. and it just looks like fun! I hate Fox just as much as the next guy but i gotta give it to them for this one. ill be seeing it this weekend for sure. it also helps they had great producers and directors, i get the feeling they had most of the power in making this movie.

@marvel72 You say "no surprise really". But what about all the times you've said it'll bomb & it definitely won't beat Thor or Cap?

@Intruder I'll take that bet & i'll get back to you when we see the results.

I loved Thor but this X-Men First Class film was even better. It'll do around £85 million box office for the weekend I reckon. This was easily the best Marvel film out of the lot so far, Michael Fassbender and Kevin Bacon simply take it above anything we've seen since Iron Man for performances. The general movie goers have an understanding of this franchise and this will grab that attention easily through good word of mouth. It'll make a lot more money than Thor in no time.

@Intruder You said this film would flop like a pancake too, and here we are with the evidence that you were wrong.
$3.37 million wrong. :D
(And that's just for midnight)

It all depends on how front-loaded X-men is. Certainly, as an existing movie franchise, it's going to have more fans who want to see it first. It's well down from Wolverine though, so it is suffering because of the quality of the last two X flicks... and perhaps the lack of Wolverine as well.

@prettynuclear: If you'd care to look at it that way, Thor is the 4th "Avengers" flick, with Cap being the 5th. I think Captain America can do that well, and I'm not on crack, honest.

@ grimekid

yeah i want it to bomb, but i think over time thor will come out on top.

iron man, iron man 2 & thor have all out gross the four previous x-men films.

x-men $296,339,527
x-men 2 $407,711,549
x-men 3 $459,359,555
x-men origin wolverine $373,062,864

thor $400+,000,000
iron man $585,174,222
iron man 2 $623,433,331

wonder if itll beat panda 2 or hangover 2 this weekend
PaulRom
PaulRom - 6/3/2011, 12:50 PM
Not surprised actually.
And I think it'll still continue outgrossing Thor. Most people saw Thor already, and it's consistent dropping every week at the box office shows that few want to see it after the first or second week of release. Besides, First Class is better reviewed and that could help its gross, but I'm sure people are tired of the franchise after X3 and Wolverine, so that might not make people interested in seeing another X-Men film until the First Class sequel or whenever.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 6/3/2011, 12:53 PM
It's a more familiar brand, so it makes sense. Even before the movies, people were more familiar with the X-men than they were with Thor.
THORION76

Thor was a badass movie and i think 1st class is going to be very good also. I think the problem is that most everyone on this site dos'nt like the way fox has been doing X-men film's so when this one is good it make's us look bad. Just because 1st class does good dos'nt mean Thor is bad, i talked alot of crap about 1st class in the beginning and now i gotta look like a dumbass. This is a lesson to all of us fan boy's out there that we got to root for all the CBM's so they keep making them. And pray one day marvel can get the X-men back and make a real 1st class. EVERYBODY enjoy the superhero summer and support/ watch all the CBM's.

What a bunch of morons still bashing this movie. I can't believe you want it to bomb. Go see it first.

Green Lantern and Captain America: The First Avenger will blow this movie away. And even if they don't, X-Men: First Class will never make money like The Dark Knight or the Iron Man movies. Long live the age of Marvel Studios and anything good DC can put out. No more unofficial Marvel stuff from FOX.
PoPcornDude
PoPcornDude - 6/3/2011, 1:20 PM
X-men might do better than Thor, in terms of money but that is because it's a well known franchise while Thor was not, aside from fans not many knew or know who or what is Thor.
Thor was a good enjoyable movie, it was not the best CBM but it helped to established an unknown character to the main public, overall I'm pleased and happy that Thor happened !!!
MAXQ1961
MAXQ1961 - 6/3/2011, 1:38 PM
Note to Fox: Give Matthew Vaughn and Bryan Singer a big raise and a free reign on the sequels and throw in the Fantastic Four if you want a truly decent movie. Michael Fassbender would make a great Mr. Fantastic and Jennifer Lawrence a great Invisible Girl.Fox got so damned lucky!

@puyguy -I totally agree with you. None of these other films come close to topping TDK. And with TDKR, Nolan will have completed the perfect CBM trilogy. People need to quit blowing Thor.
BigK1337

@prettynuclear
Who the hell wants to see Michael Fassbender?
You know, if that is your reason for Captain America going to flop and needs to be pushed back; than really, don't make unreasonable assumptions that people won't see a movie due to an actor in it.

@puyguy & MatchesMalone
Yeah the movie is nothing special once you completly ignore all the action/fight sequences that takes place among the movie, the pseudo Shakeperean plot lines incorporated into the script of that movie, and the amazing visuals used for Asgard and Johntenheim.

So yeah, nobody should not be empressed by a movie about gods and fantasy when it is done right.

It was so good, but as puguy said, its not better than for example The dark knight and batman begins

But a sequel to First Class would be fine because there are still some things missing in this movie
superbatspiderman

I just got backl from seeing it and I actually enjoyed it more than I did Thor. I am not saying that I hated Thor but I just felt it was kind of rushed at times. First Class's action scenes were a lot better and longer than Thor's and the charcter developement was really doos too. This is definately the best Marvel movie that Fox has released since X2.

@puyguy and MatchesMalone360...why do you guys have to compare Thor with other DC films? You didn't care much for Thor, fine, that's your opinion. Other's mileage may vary. Different folks, different strokes. Why must you criticize the film over and over, trying to force your opinons on others? Learn to respect other's opinions. You said yours already, fine, end it there. If you still force the issue, that's just bad form.

And just so you won't back-pedal..."everyone who is constantly getting a hard one over thor is just stupid and a son of a turd."---quote from puyguy...."People need to quit blowing Thor"---quote from MatchesMalone360....Tsk-tsk...this just shows the kind of individuals you are. You didn't like Thor much? Meh, who cares.

About the headline...well, this is X-men's 5th film (even have cameos of Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romjin) an established franchise, X-Men has a bigger fanbase than Thor, so, well, the fact that it narrowly beat Thor's midnight screening is a bit surprising. I have seen it, it's ok. Problem is, it's the same "us against them"..."mutants versus humans" theme all over again. Sure, it's fine, and it is an X-men film...but come on...it's been four films of that already...why not bring us Apocalypse instead, so instead of mutant versus humans, it's survival of the fittest? Or something else.
