X-MEN '97 Executive Producer Describes Beau DeMayo's Recent Firing As A Parting Of The Ways

X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo was recently fired by Marvel Studios, but that's not how executive producer Brad Winderbaum is describing the situation as the plot continues to thicken. Check it out...

Right as Marvel Studios was gearing up for X-Men '97's world premiere, the trades confirmed that Disney had fired showrunner Beau DeMayo. He'd overseen development on the first two seasons of Marvel Animation's X-Men: The Animated Series revival and was among the writers to try their hand at sorting out Blade's screenplay.

We've since heard a few different explanations for DeMayo's dismissal, but in an interview with Entertainment Weekly (via Toonado.com), Brad Winderbaum, the head of streaming, television, and animation at Marvel Studios, shared something of a clarification.

"I can't talk about the details," he confessed, "but I can say that Beau had real respect and passion for these characters and wrote what I think are excellent scripts that really the rest of the team were able to draw inspiration from [to] build this amazing show that's on screen."

Asked if he would consider DeMayo's MCU departure a firing, Winderbaum replied, "I don't. 'We parted ways' is the best way I could say."

Anyone hoping for specifics from Marvel Studios about what went on behind the scenes will likely be disappointed as there's clearly something of a company line being followed here. Earlier this week, the Marvel exec shared similar sentiments when he said, "[DeMayo] did excellent work writing seasons 1 and 2, and I can’t wait for fans to see the series."

"The entire team came together to create a revival worthy of the X-Men’s 60-year legacy. From Stan and Jack, to Claremont, to the Lewalds, we all truly were standing on the shoulders of giants."

The site did, however, push Winderbaum for details on what all this means for the planned third season of X-Men '97

"I've now seen versions of animatics for the entire second season," he reveals. "Obviously, when you're in that stage, there's a lot of work to do. It's editorial, but it's also still iterative because there's still story to be worked out when you put it on its feet in that way. We're going to start development on the third season very soon."

"And, yeah, we're trying to figure out who is going to be that voice on the page, but luckily - that's going to come as a surprise - there's many talented X-Men fans, excellent writers."

X-Men'97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future.

X-Men '97 is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 20.

So how hard it is to contact the old creatives of the original?

Oh, they dont check boxes. That is why

@vectorsigma - Or maybe they didn't want to return? Maybe they retired? Why does everything have to be a political talking point for you?
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 3/17/2024, 11:10 AM
@SonOfAGif - because everything effed up that is happening in the mcu is political in nature

They were able to get most of the voice actors and none from the writers/showrunner side?

@vectorsigma - bad writing is definitely political. Especially Thor's arc in Love & Thunder, or the Eternals plot being all over the place

@vectorsigma - The original creatives are more than likely in their 70s/80s by now. And plus, the quality of the original show is not that great.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 3/18/2024, 1:43 AM
@cubrn - i see. Then there are a number of great animated series people out there. Greg Weisman for example. Or get even crazier by considering Bruce Timm or Paul Dini. Anyone who know these stuff and not someone who has no major previous record of similar work and they will fire before the show even starts 😅

So he wasn't fired and he didn't quit, but "Parted ways".

Maybe he was dating someone on staff and they found his OF and confronted him with it leading to a break up and his leaving the show and deleting his account.

Or maybe he decided he was the monkey messiah and went to live up a mountain and fish for the rest of his life. With a very long fishing rod.

Could be anything. One speculation is as good as another. Nobody really knows waht it's all about. Not even the cast and crew of X-Men. Not even Beau DeMayo truly knows what happened.

But the Shadow knows.
*evil cackle*

@ObserverIO - I tend to read 'parted ways' as told quit or be fired more oft than not but isn't always the case.

The list of reasons why advised it would be a good idea to part ways is too long to try and guess TBH, although at best they all would LOOK bad (such as the dating an intern type of thing that can be percieved as bad due to differences in position/age even if both consenting adults sittuations).

@ObserverIO - His OF really can't have anything to do with it. That was public knowledge before he got hired. According to some older report, it was just some spicy stuff but nothing too explicit. And if I recall correctly, he didn't use it anymore.
ObserverIO

@Unites - The only reason I think it could be a factor would be that he shut down his insta account. But that could be for some other reason.

Like maybe he did something really bad. Criminally bad. And he didn't want the inevitable social media shit show that would happen when everyone found out so he shut down his account, and Disney are keeping it quiet because it would be bad press for the show.

If that's the case then I don't think we'll find out what happened until after Season 2.

But then if it was something really bad, would Winderbaum still be talking about what great work he did? I mean, I guess if he did good work he did good work. Nobody seems to be saying what great of a person he is. They will just talk about the work he did (which they need to promote).

This is very clearly damage control because they still need to sell this series to us.

''We're going to start development on the third season very soon.''

That's the most interesting bit I take from this. Kinda expected S1 and 2 to be part of the Multiverse Saga, with Marvel Studios then shifting focus to live-action plans for the team

Larry Houston.. make him the showrunner. He's had his finger in the pie since the 89' pilot Pryde of the X-Men, I still wish they greenlit the show

@bobevanz - Pride of the X-Men remains the greatest piece of animated X-Men to this day. I would have taken a full series of it over the 90's show.

I can't wait to see how this plays out. I'm guessing we'll know by the end of season 3.

My assumption: he drew the line somewhere and placed integrity above conformation. Reminds me of some past bros...
