BOX OFFICE: X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Narrowly Beats DAYS OF FUTURE PAST's Thursday Night Takings

20th Century Fox and Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse is off to a good start at the US box office, topping Singer's previous entry in the franchise's Thursday night preview haul. More past the jump...

Bryan Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse is heading towards a very respectable Memorial Day weekend box office haul, as it's already topped Days Of Future Past's Thursday night preview takings. That movie launched with $8.1 million back in 2014 and went on to earn $110.6 million over the three-day holiday weekend, but Apocalypse has just inched past that with $8.2 million from last night's screenings.

The latest instalment in the X-Men franchise didn't go down too well with critics, but fans seem to have embraced it a lot more, so strong word of mouth should work in its favor.

Apocalypse is estimated to earn between $80 and $100M over the weekend, but will face stiff competition from Disney's Alice Through the Looking Glass.

It will be really interesting what will make more money, this or Alice.

@Cooler - Neither will make as much as their predecessor

@MiopTop - Very likely, yes.

@Cooler - It is very unlikely the Alice will be even close to X-Men. I would guess Alice does like 70% of Apoc.

@Asmodeus - You realise the original Alice is a member of the billion dollar club and as popular as the X-men are, Alice is far more popular and recognisable.

I just watched the Rogue Cut of Days of Future Past again yesterday. Easily the best X-Men film, and it's a bummer that Apocalypse does not build on its successes.

I also rewatched First Class last week. The first 40 minutes of that movie are good, but the end suffers from all the C-List X-Men. It should have just focused on the globe-trotting of Prof. X and Magneto, and stuck to the tone of the first few Magneto scenes, which are still the strongest in the entire Fox-Men series.

X-Men has become X-Meh...saw it, was slow.

I don't know how much longer I can pull for the X-Men franchise in the movies.

@MonsterSquad35 - "You can polish a turd, spray some perfume on it and put a lovely silk ribbon around it, but at the end of the day…. it’s still a turd."

Nuff said. Best review ever.

Has issues, sure, but it has a lot of good stuff. I liked it despite all its weaknesses.

@Gunslinger - Good Read...It had some moments, I definitely agree with you there.

I think the "Super Hero Fatigue" people talk about with these movies has really been more predominant in this franchise. Whereas Marvel continues to strive with more heroes/villains.

It's not a terrible movie at all but they all seem morph into the same thing when I see X-men movies.

@MonsterSquad35 - It was slow, I agree, but I still liked it. It was a change of pace. Also, it's odd how we never see you know who's body after the Mansion fallout. It makes me wonder what they're planning.

@MonsterSquad35 @Luminus - yeah I agree with the review too. Apocalypse was completely wasted. Such a shame. Hope J-Law doesn't come back so Sinister gets the proper focus. Still, my expectations in that tegard are low...

I think it will be kind of like BvS getting a respectable number but not gonna be anything special after the first week or two.
